Cecil Walker

Sir Alfred Cecil Walker was an Ulster Unionist Member of Parliament for North Belfast.
He became involved in Unionist electoral politics in the 1970s being elected to Belfast City Council in 1977. He ran unsuccessfully for the Belfast North constituency in 1979, narrowly losing to John McQuade of the DUP. However he was successful in winning the seat 4 years later in 1983 after McQuade retired. In later years he was one of the M.P.s with the lowest attendance rate at Westminster.
He lost his seat to the Democratic Unionist Party in 2001 following a disatrous television appearance in which he stumbled over some of the most rudimentary questions. He later claimed that his hearing-aid had not been working properly. He was one of the MPs to resign their seats in 1985 in protest at the Anglo-Irish Agreement and held it on re-election. Walker was in favour of the Good Friday Agreement, backing leader David Trimble right to the very end of his career.
Sir Cecil received a KBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.Template:NI-politician-stub Template:UK-MP-stub
