Constitution class starship
From Free net encyclopedia
The Constitution class was a series of Starfleet vessel in the Star Trek fictional universe, first put into service in the mid-23rd century. Ships of this class were multi-role, but generally used for exploration and diplomacy; however, they were quite capable in combat against ships of most enemy powers of their time, with an armament consisting of (at least) two photon torpedo launchers, two main phaser banks, and a number of secondary phasers. In the late 2260s, the surviving Constitutions underwent an extensive refit with major upgrades in or replacement of all primary systems, extending the class' lifespan by at least twenty years. The most notable of these changes were overall streamlining, upgrade of all major ship's systems, replacement of the external navigational deflector dish with a more powerful internal one, and replacement of the warp nacelles as well as the original bridge module.
Constitution Class Starships
- USS Constellation (NCC-1017)
- Named for the USS Constellation, the starship Constellation was commanded by Commodore Matt Decker and was destroyed in 2267 by a massive planet-eating machine.
- USS Constitution (NCC-1700, ex-NX-1700)
- Named for the USS Constitution, the starship Constitution was the pathfinder of its class. Fate uncertain. Given that it has a higher registry number than several other Constitution class ships, some have speculated that either the lower-numbered ships were upgraded from a preceding class, or that NCC-1700 was actually the second USS Constitution, and that its forerunner was the class pathfinder.
- USS Defiant (NCC-1764)
- Named for the HMS Defiant, the starship Defiant was lost in 2268, having disappeared into a rift in space. The ship's ultimate fate was never discovered - at least not in the normal Star Trek universe. A Star Trek: Enterprise episode reveals that it ended up in the Mirror Universe, and over 100 years in the past - where it was quickly discovered by the Terran Empire and used by the crew of the ISS Enterprise.
- USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)
- The ship featured in Star Trek under the command of James T. Kirk. It was refitted from 2269 to 2271 and was destroyed in 2285 when Kirk ordered the self-destruction of the ship.
- USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)
- The second Constitution Class Starship to bear the name, it has been suggested by some fandom circles to have been a new Constitution Class ship (or variant of the class) constructed. Official Paramount Studios sources state that Gene Roddenberry had suggested that the Enterprise-A was the rechristened USS Yorktown (NCC-1717) , although this has never been officially established in any series or movie. The Enterprise-A was decommissioned in 2293 after the Khitomer Conference.
- USS Excalibur (NCC-1664)
- Named for the mythical sword Excalibur, the starship Excalibur was severely damaged by the Enterprise in 2268 while Richard Daystrom's M5 computer was in control of the Enterprise. Presumed recovered.
- USS Exeter (NCC-1706)
- Named for the HMS Exeter, the starship Exeter was commanded by Captain Ronald Tracey in 2268 when she was found in orbit over Omega IV with its crew dead. The Exeter had become biologically contaminated, which had killed the crew and reduced them to their most basic elements. The ultimate fate of the ship was not known. Some resources have mentioned that the ship was scuttled by Starfleet due to the contamination, other sources say the ship was abandoned in orbit around Omega IV; or was recovered, decontaminated and returned to service. The Exeter's later career has been the subject of a series of fan-made short films in "Starship Exeter."
USS Farragut (NCC-1647) the starship commanded by a Captain Garrovick. It was James T. Kirk's first starship post. In 2257, it was attacked by the Diakrome Cloud Creature, which killed over 200 crew members.
- USS Hood (NCC-1703)
- Named for the battlecruiser HMS Hood, the starship Hood was one of the ships faced by and nearly destroyed by the Enterprise in the M5 Computer test.
- USS Intrepid (NCC-1831)
- Named for the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, the starship Intrepid was destroyed by a spacefaring organism in 2268. It was entirely crewed by Vulcans.
- USS Kongo (NCC-1710)
- On a deep space exploration mission as of 2293. Listed on computer readout screens in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Named after a famous series of Japanese warships.
- USS Lexington (NCC-1709)
- Named for the USS Lexington, the starship Lexington was one of the ships faced by and nearly destroyed by the Enterprise in the M5 Computer test.
- USS Potemkin (NCC-1657)
- The Potemkin was one of the ships faced by and nearly destroyed by the Enterprise in the M5 Computer test.
- USS Yorktown (NCC-1717)
- Named for the USS Yorktown, the starship Yorktown was disabled temporarily by an alien probe of unknown origin during Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. According to official Paramount Studios sources, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had suggested that the Yorktown was rechristened as USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) following the Probe Crisis. This, however, has not been officially established as canon information by any movie or series. The questionable "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" states that the USS Ti-Ho was a vessel renamed to "Enterprise" in Star Trek IV.
- The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual speculates that the USS Yorktown may have became the Enterprise-A.
