- This article is on the Sovereign class ship in the Star Trek fictional universe. For information on the Sovereign class of ship in the Star Wars universe, see Super Star Destroyer.
In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the Sovereign class starship is the most advanced and powerful type of ship in Starfleet from the mid-2370s onward. The Sovereign class design harks of traditional Federation starship design, having an elliptical-shaped saucer section directly attached to the engineering section. The main bridge, main impulse engines, lifeboats, sensors, the main shuttlebay, and phaser arrays are on the dorsal surface of the saucer section while additional phaser arrays, a captain's yacht, and additional lifeboats occupy the ventral side of the saucer. The sleek engineering section features the main navigational deflector, two large warp nacelles, the warp reactor, main torpedo launchers, and an additional shuttlebay.
With 24 decks and measuring 685.1 metres in length, it is longer but less massive than the Galaxy class that preceded it. As of 2379, the Sovereign class starship USS Enterprise is the flagship of Starfleet.
Image:NCC-1701-E.jpgClassified as an explorer-type ship (like the Galaxy class), numerous encounters with advanced threat forces from the 2360s onward – namely the Borg and the Dominion – prompted Starfleet to emphasize the class's battle potential over exploration capabilities, making it the most powerful starship in Starfleet in its day. The Sovereign class was equipped with type-twelve phaser arrays (the most powerful available for starship use at the time), quantum torpedoes, and standard photon torpedoes.
Sovereign class vessels apparently underwent at least one major upgrade only a few years after entering service, namely to increase the quantity and coverage of the ship's (aft) weaponry. Refits to the Enterprise-E occurred sometime between the events of Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis.
Design notes
In real life, the Sovereign class was designed by Rick Sternbach, Herman Zimmerman, and illustrator John Eaves for Star Trek: First Contact. Backstage diagrams by Eaves indicate that the Sovereign class was capable of saucer separation (like the Galaxy class); however, this ability has not been observed on-screen.
Canonical and other sources contradict regarding the number of decks for this ship class. In Star Trek: First Contact, Captain Picard and concomitant schematics of the Sovereign class indicate 24 decks; however, Lieutenant Daniels later states that the Borg have commandeered decks 26 up to 11. In Star Trek: Nemesis, Lt. Cmdr. Data indicates that shielding has been lost (with Remans boarding the ship) on deck 29. Beyond this, a fight scene in Nemesis between Cmdr. Riker and the Reman Viceroy continues into the Jefferies tubes apparently below deck 29, followed by a deep chasm (most likely a utilities trunk) extending several decks down. This discrepancy has not been widely identified or addressed.
Known Sovereign class starships
- USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)
- Commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Enterprise-E was launched on stardate 49027.5 from the San Francisco Yards. Circa stardate 50893.5, the Enterprise-E fought in the Battle of Sector 001 before being transported back to 2063 where she was partially assimilated by the Borg attempting to prevent first contact. In 2375, the Enterprise prevented the relocation of the Baku people from their planet in the Briar Patch in sector 441. Circa stardate 56844.9, the Enterprise underwent a refit and later was ordered to Romulus to meet with the new Praetor, Shinzon, who built the Reman warbird Scimitar. The Enterprise was severely damaged when Picard opted to ram the Scimitar in the Bassen Rift in sector 1045 to prevent the deployment of the thalaron weapon.
- USS Sovereign (NCC-73811, ex-NX-73811)
- The starship Sovereign was the pathfinder of its class, featured in the PC videogame Star Trek: Bridge Commander, as the ship the player commands for the latter part of the game.
