After 1989 for the first time the party formed the government in 1998, under the leadership of Miloš Zeman, and is still in power now, although this is likely to change after elections in late spring of 2006.

Its member Jiří Paroubek is the Prime Minister, heading a coalition with two smaller parties, the Christian Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party and the Freedom Union-Democratic Union. The current chairman of the party is Bohuslav Sobotka whose predecessor Stanislav Gross resigned after a scandal in which he was unable to explain the source financial resources used to pay for his home. Gross's predecessor Vladimír Špidla was forced to resign in 2004 after the ČSSD lost in European Parlimentary elections.
