It was built by Roger Bigod, and became the seat of the Earls of Norfolk and the Dukes of Norfolk. In common with many other buildings in Suffolk, the main walls of the castle are faced with flint.
One of its most famous residents was Mary Tudor before she was crowned Queen.
It is now managed by English Heritage.
