Williams conducted several interviews with Stallman during the writing of the book as well as interviewing some of Stallman's class mates, and his mother.

Structure
The book is divided into fourteen chapters and three appendices which include one for the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). The hardcover print edition by O'Reilly spans 240 pages and is 8.9 inches high, 5.9″ wide and 0.8″ thick (226 mm by 150 mm by 20 mm).[1]
