Hals

Hals is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 191 km², and has a total population of 11,448 (2005). Its mayor is Bent Sørensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and site of its municipal council is the town of Gandrup. Other towns in the municipality are Hals, Hou, Vester Hassing, Øster Hassing and Ulsted.

Neighboring municipalities are Dronninglund to the north, Aalborg to the west and south, and Sejlflod to the south. To the east is Ålborg Bay (Ålborg Bugt). Because Hals municipality is located on the north shores of the Limfjord, the waterway that separates the main body of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy, its southern municipal neighbors are separated from Hals by the waters of Langerak.

By January 1, 2007 Hals municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Nibe, Sejlflod, and Aalborg municipalities to form the new Aalborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 1,171 km² and a total population of ca. 192,353. The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
