One of their more interesting products was the Imation LS-120 SuperDisk, a floppy disk that could store up to 120 MB.

The company was established in Maplewood, Minnesota in 1996 when it was spun off from 3M and moved its headquarters to Oakdale (a neighboring St. Paul suburb). The company originally comprised of 3M's data storage and imaging divisions; Imation has since sold its imaging and photographic film businesses to Kodak to concentrate on storage.

The company was involved in the development of many technological improvements in data storage over the past years, such as the introduction of the first magnetic tape in 1947, the first quarter inch tape in 1971 and the 3.5 inch floppy diskette in 1984.

As of 2004, 2,300 employees worldwide, including more than 300 scientists, are employed by Imation. It has a market presence in more than 100 countries. 58 percent of its sales are generated outside the US.
