Maplewood, Minnesota

Maplewood is a city located in Ramsey County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 34,947. The city is a first ring suburb of St. Paul which directly borders the north and east sides of the capital city. Maplewood Mall and the Myth nightclub are located there, as are the corporate headquarters and campus of 3M Corporation.

Image:MNMap-doton-Maplewood.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 46.6 km² (18.0 mi²). 44.9 km² (17.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 34,947 people, 13,758 households, and 9,190 families residing in the city. The population density was 779.0/km² (2,017.5/mi²). There were 14,004 housing units at an average density of 312.2/km² (808.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.69% White, 3.54% African American, 0.55% Native American, 4.54% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 13,758 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $51,596, and the median income for a family was $63,049. Males had a median income of $43,033 versus $30,557 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,387. 4.8% of the population and 3.0% of families were below the poverty line. 4.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
