How to participate in the Philosophy WikiProject

This project is open to all Wiki editors. Adding your name indicates that you are willing to work with others on the development of Wikipedia's philosophy articles, and be an involved member of the project.

Be bold and add yourself to our Participants Roster.

Once you are on the roster, be sure to add the Philosophy WikiProject task list to your user page. To do this, place {{PhilosophyTasksBox}} at the top of your page.

This Project's Goals and Tasks: how you can help

This WikiProject is a community of Wikipedians who share an interest in philosophy and who wish to improve the general quality of Wikipedia philosophical articles, and how they are accessed. It is an effort to coordinate the work of Wikipedians who are knowledgeable about philosophy in an effort to improve the general quality and range of Wikipedia articles on philosophical topics.

The goals of this WikiProject, and the associated chores are listed below. Just pick any that interest you, and jump in:

1. To make the first visit of newcomers to the subject of Philosophy on Wikipedia enjoyable and rewarding, so that they want to return

2. To make it easy and enjoyable for users to find the philosophical issues and answers they are looking for:

  • Maintain the philosophy links on Wikipedia's many general reference resources (browsing lists, categories, etc.; for these lead users to the philosophy pages we maintain):
    • Familiarize yourself with those resource pages. Click here to see a list.
    • Click here to see the list of pages (with links to key philosophy pages) that should be maintained. Sometimes links get erased, so it is up to us to keep an eye on them in case they do.
    • Check the categories on the above list manually.
    • Monitor the other pages on the above list using "my watchlist", and check the pages periodically to make sure philosophy and its topics are represented properly.
  • Maintain the Philosophy Portal:
    • Monitor it for vandalism using "my watchlist".
    • Update the "featured" items, at the beginning of each month, listing (if they have links) or including (if they don't have links) the removed featured items in the appropriate archive (links to the archives are on the Portal).
  • Maintain and improve the philosophy topic lists. These provide the functions of a table of contents, index, and in some cases a glossary, to the philosophy section. They give the most comprehensive overview of philosophy topics on the Wikipedia.
    • Monitor them for vandalism using "my watchlist".
    • Add missing topics.
    • On the glossaries, add in missing definitions as time permits. Click here.
  • Monitor the recent changes to basic philosophy articles and revert vandalism: Recent changes in basic articles about philosophy
  • Monitor the recent changes to all philosophy articles and revert vandalism:

Recent changes in all philosophical topics

3. To improve the overall coverage of philosophy on Wikipedia, starting at the top:

  • Identify subject areas of philosophy which lack sufficient coverage on the 'pedia, and create articles for them:
    • Add philosophical terms in the List of philosophical topics which do not yet appear there, as internal links. If the link turns red, then it doesn't have an article on the Wikipedia yet. (But be sure to check for alternative renderings of the possible article title.)
    • Pick a red link in the List of philosophical topics that you are familiar with, click on it, and start writing.
  • Improve articles which need help:
    • Locate pages that need attention, then add them to the Philosophy WikiProject task list.
    • Add the Philosophy WikiProject task list to your User: or User_talk: page. To do this, add {{PhilosophyTasksBox}} anywhere on the page, but preferrably at the top.
    • Have a go at editing an article from the task list; check them off the list if you like the result.
    • Vote or nominate an article to help choose our next collaboration of the month
    • Check the list of stubs for an article you can expand

4. To build a community of philosophically-minded contributors:

  • If you haven't already done so, join this project by adding your name to the Participants Roster!
  • Add this page and the Philosophy WikiProject task list to your watchlist, to stay informed about which articles need attention, and other goings on.
  • Vote for or Nominate someone for the Star of Sophia
  • Help recruit new members. Look for potential participants, and invite them to join. Add {{PhilInvit}} to their talk page, to leave them our standard invitation, or for the personal touch, write your own.
  • Help biring the Philosophy Portal to featured portal status.

5. To provide guidelines for writing philosophical articles for the 'pedia:

Some old unfinished editing tasks have been archived here. It contains requests for fixups made in 2004, but have not been completed.

Thanks for helping out!

General standards for philosophy articles

In addition to the standards suggested for all Wikipedia articles, philosophy articles need more thorough and rigorous standards. Below are new standards and a few especially pertinent old ones. Note that new standards should be subjected to consensus building before being added here (a consensus should be reached on the discussion page).

Readability -- see Guidelines for Readability in philosophy articles.

  • Generally, introductory articles should target the general reader, whereas articles dealing with specific arguments or publications might assume greater familiarity with jargon and concepts.

Article Format -- see philosophy articles style guide.

Lead section -- each article should begin with a suitable introduction. See Wikipedia:Lead section.

  • Clear and concise -- the perfect Wikipedia article begins with a definition and clear description of the subject; the lead section introduces and explains the subject and its significance clearly and accurately, without going into excess detail.
  • Summarize key points -- the lead should briefly summarise the most important points covered in an article in such a way that it could stand on its own as a concise version of the article. It is even more important here than for the rest of the article that the text is accessible, and some consideration should be given to creating interest in reading the whole article
  • Proportional to the length of the article -- Wikipedia:Lead section suggests the following guidelines for the length of the lead. Go longer only if absolutely necessary. It should be possible to keep it short by writing a short summary for each of the article's main sections.
< 15,000 characters 15,000 characters - 30,000 characters > 30,000 characters
one or two paragraphs two or three paragraphs three paragraphs

Cite sources -- this is so important in all articles (Wikipedia is often dramatically lacking in references), and especially in philosophy articles, where source texts are the only way to really understand and work through a philosopher's arguments.

Critique in articles -- see Requirements for criticisms in philosophy articles

  • No attribution, no criticism -- the general rule for "Criticisms" sections in philosophy articles is, "if you can't (or don't want to) attribute a criticism of a philosophy to a specific person or group, or aren't able to reference it to a book, don't write it".
  • Avoid weasel words

Geographic divisions -- see the standard under consideration at Wikipedia:WikiProject Philosophy/geographic divisions.

Categorization -- philosophy articles should be categorized according to the guidelines at Category talk:Philosophy.

Custom templates (this WikiProject's toolbox)

Portal Pointer

{{portalpar|Philosophy|Socrates.png}} adds a box which leads to the combined philosophy category/portal. It looks like this:

Template:Portalpar

It should appear at the bottom of each philosophy article, immediately before the categories list.

Task Box

{{PhilosophyTasks}} will add the Philosophy WikiProject task list to a page. To add the pretty boxed version seen above, use {{PhilosophyTasksBox}} instead. (Note: Both are case-sensitive.)

This list is regularly updated by participants, and is used for reporting pages that need attention. If you find such a page, feel free to edit Template:PhilosophyTasks to add it to the list. Please add items to the task list by placing them in the standby area for the appropriate section

If you wish to place the box on your own User or User_talk page, it would be much appreciated. (Keep in mind that the box is currently auto-justified to the right.)

Project pages

Putting {{philosophy}} at the top of a page will add this notice to it:

Image:Socrates.png This article is part of the Philosophy WikiProject, an attempt at creating a standardised, informative, comprehensive and easy-to-use Philosophy resource. Please read the instructions and standards for writing and maintaining philosophy articles.

This message should be placed at the top of the talk pages of all philosophy articles, especially:

  • articles that members of the WikiProject are actively trying to improve.
  • articles about major philosophical topics.
  • articles that need special attention. (In this case, you should also add the article name to the Philosophy WikiProject task list. You can view a list of these articles by clicking on What links here on the template page.)

Collaboration of the month

{{PhilCOTW}} will add the Template:PhilCOTW template to the page. This is how it looks: Template:PhilCOTW It is added to the top of the discussion page of the current collaboration of the month. To have your page listed, just add it to the list of articles at Template talk:PhilosophyTasks/vote.

(The W in PhilCOTW stands for Week. The collaborations used to be weekly programs, but perhaps philosophers need more time to think, so it was changed to a monthly program.)

Stubs

{{Philo-stub}} will add the Template:Philo-stub template to the page. This is how it looks:

Template:Philo-stub

Add it to the bottom of the discussion page of a philosophy-related stub. You can view a list of these stubs at Category:Philosophy stubs or by clicking on What links here on the template page.

Invitation to join this project

{{PhilInvit}} Will add the Template:PhilInvit template to the page. This is how it looks:

Template:PhilInvit

This is to be placed on the user:talk of potential participants. if you spot someone who might be interested in this project, place this template on their talk page. Don't forget to sign it - it looks more personal. Don't forget to check the Participants Roster first, just in case they are already a member.
