Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

From Free net encyclopedia

Template:Infobox Film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is the fifth movie from Kevin Smith, famous for his cult films Clerks., Mallrats, and the more commercially successful films Chasing Amy and Dogma. The title and its logo are references to the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back.

At the time, Smith said that this would be the last of his films to feature Jay and Silent Bob. He has since announced that they will appear in the film Clerks 2. It includes numerous references to Smith's earlier films, including brief appearances by many characters from those films. Actors reprising past roles in Smith films include Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Joey Lauren Adams, Jeff Anderson, Scott Mosier, and Brian O'Halloran. Other main stars include Will Ferrell, Shannon Elizabeth, Ali Larter, and Eliza Dushku.

This movie is a prime example of the phenomenon of fanservice. While maintaining its own plot, the movie has nearly constant references to past Kevin Smith/Jersey Trilogy movies, contains myriad cameos from actors ranging from George Carlin and Chris Rock to Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, in-jokes, and homage to pop-culture icons, especially the aforementioned Star Wars movies.

Other cameo roles include popular late 1990s and early 2000s actors, most notably Seann William Scott and Jason Biggs (both of American Pie fame), James Van Der Beek (of Dawson's Creek fame), and Jon Stewart (of The Daily Show fame). The movie also features cameo appearances by Smith's own wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, and his then-infant daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, the first film of his to do so.

The soundtrack to this film features the 2001 Afroman hit, "Because I Got High", whose music video was directed by Kevin Smith and featured the characters Jay and Silent Bob.

Plot

Jay and Bob find out that Bluntman & Chronic, the comic book based on their likenesses, has been adapted into a film in production by Miramax Films. Upon learning of the movie, as well as the negative reaction the movie has received so far, the two set out on a quest to Hollywood, to prevent the movie from being made and tainting their "good name", or at the very least "get [their] motherfucking movie check" from the royalties due them.

On the way, they befriend an animal liberation group called the C.L.I.T., consisting of four women and one man they picked up for the cause. It is revealed that the organization is a front; the man (played by Seann William Scott) is a patsy, intended as a diversion by freeing an orangutan from an animal testing laboratory while the girls rob a diamond depository nearby. Jay cons the man into embarrassing himself in order to get closer to Justice (played by Shannon Elizabeth), the most compassionate of the women and the one he finds himself smitten with.

Jay and Bob now must stand in as the patsies; a wildlife field marshal, named Marshall Willenholly (played by Will Ferrell) (Smith admits that the name is derived from the three main characters in the TV show Land of the Lost.) properly blinded to the diamond heist chases them as they (along with the orangutan) make their way to Hollywood.

Trivia

  • Heather Graham was originally offered Shannon Elizabeth's role, but she turned it down because she couldn't figure out why her character would fall in love with Jay.
  • The sub-plot involving the monkey theft, and a few whole lines of dialog, are taken directly from Kevin Smith's comic "Chasing Dogma," which detailed Jay and Silent Bob's journey from New Jersey to Illinois in between Chasing Amy (1997) and Dogma (1999).
  • Director Trademark: [Kevin Smith] [37] when the jewel thieves talk about their heist they have a banner that its their 37th heist. The scene of Bluntman and Chronic that Jay and Bob end up in is introduced as "Scene 37, take 1". Justice's prison number is 373737.
  • The original plot involved Jay and Silent Bob trying to save their beloved Quik Stop.
  • The fictitious website "Movie Poop Shoot" is a major plot point. Movie Poop Shoot existed as an actual website before the film's release. An obvious parody of film websites, the site contained inflammatory posts toward "Bluntman and Chronic Strike Back" which were later read in the movie (including the immortal "Fuck Jay and Silent Bob, fuck them up their stupid asses"). The thread ends with Jay's "You are the ones who are the ball-lickers." The false site also served as the home of the internet-only trailers for the film. Movie Poop Shoot has recently been converted into a bona fide website, containing news and columns about movies, comic books, and music. The inspiration for "Movie Poop Shoot" appearing in the film, is based on Smith dealing with the internet, particularly with vindictive message board posters who have said insulting things about Smith and his work in the past. Smith has been pretty vocal in the past about disliking this particular form of internet user.
  • Brodie's comic book store, "Brodie's Secret Stash," is a slightly altered version of Kevin Smith's real-life comic book store, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, in Red Bank, New Jersey.
  • This is the fifth film in Kevin Smith's intricately interconnected New Jersey films series (the first four being Clerks. (1994), Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997) and Dogma (1999). The movies are all linked by characters, themes and events and each contains numerous references to the others.
  • The movie is often shown on Comedy Central's popular Saturday midnight movie block "Secret Stash", completely uncut and unedited.
