Key Largo, Florida

Key Largo is a census-designated place and town located in Monroe County, Florida, located on the island of Key Largo, in the upper Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,886. The name comes from the Spanish Cayo Largo, or "long island". It is the first island of the Florida Keys and the originating point of the Overseas Highway to Key West.

The film, Key Largo (1948), starring Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart was set there.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 39.6 km² (15.3 mi²). 31.5 km² (12.1 mi²) of it is land and 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.54% water.

Demographics

As of the census Template:GR of 2000, there were 11,886 people, 5,245 households, and 3,288 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 377.7/km² (978.1/mi²). There were 8,043 housing units at an average density of 255.6/km² (661.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.38% White, 2.04% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 16.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,245 households out of which 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.75.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,577, and the median income for a family was $50,755. Males had a median income of $33,588 versus $25,468 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,441. 8.3% of the population and 5.9% of families were below the poverty line. 8.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
