Mick or "Mic" is a short form of the popular forename Michael and is used extensively throughout Ireland. Some also claim that it comes from the popular Irish surname "Mc-," as in McDowell, or McShane.

It is also sometimes used, usually with a lower-case "m", as an offensive slang term in British English and American English for an Irish person or a Roman Catholic.

It is also used as slang in the phrase take the mickey or take the mick meaning to tease.
