Operating environment

From Free net encyclopedia

An Operating environment, in computer software, is a GUI front-end which runs on top of an operating system. One of the most popular operating environments is the earlier versions of Microsoft Windows which ran on MS-DOS. Other operating environments include KDE, GNOME, FVVM and other Linux front-ends, although these are usually referred to as window managers. Most operating systems today include the operating environment, thus the term has become somewhat antiquated.
