List of Neopets

Template:Not verified
This is a list of Neopets in alphabetical order. Neopets are a type of virtual pet which can be adopted by players on the Neopets website. They are available in the fifty two different species listed below.

Acara

The Acara is basically goat/cat-like (with four legs and fur) and has two horns on its head. Acaras are amphibious and can breathe underwater, and it is sometimes hinted that the "tentacles" somehow give the Acara the ability to echolocate when submerged in water. The tentacles may imply that the Acara was based on Capricorn. In general, they tend to be very playful and enjoy exploring, racing, and looking for hidden treasure under the sea.

When first introduced on the Neopets website on April 28, 2000, the pet now known as the Acara was an otter-like Neopet called the Tigren. They were chosen from a player's design as part of a Create-A-Pet contest. The name was changed on July 19 for reasons unknown, along with the Polypup's change to the Gelert. (The news page of the time touted the change as "evolution", in keeping with the Pokémon-like feel that the pets originally had.)

In the Neopets TCG, Acaras are associated with the element of water.

Originally, they were limited edition but have now become common. They are quite popular, particularly among female players. As of January 2006, they were ranked 8th of 50+ species in popularity; with approximately 5.2 million in existence.

They can be painted in any of 36+ colors available to the species. One of the more interesting of these is the Maraquan variant, which appears to be a return to the Acara's watery roots.

Famous Acaras include

  • Vira, a vain creature featured in the Gallery of Evil
  • Princess Fernypoo, a spoilt princess featuring in the card game Cheat!
  • Professor Chesterpot, the Acara who discovered Maraqua
  • Roberta, a diplomat-turned-sorceress who stars in the Neopets: The Darkest Faerie video game.
  • Masila, the mistress of the double cross from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot.
  • Mipsy the spellcaster of the Neoquest II RPG.
  • Fauna, one of the twelve protectors of Altador.

Aisha

With a weird resemblance to a cat with four ears (two of different shape) these have had been popular with the Neopets staff due to a numerous amount of Aisha heros and villains. First drawn in a goofy cartoon style it has been progressing in the Neopian world.

In the Neopets TCG game, Aishas are commonly accociated with the element of light.

Famous Aishas include:

  • Jerdana, one of the twelve protectors of Altador and King Altador's sorceress.
  • Lisha, Jeran's sister from Meridell.
  • The Court Dancer was a beautiful dancer sent to prevent King Skarl to do anything to help his army in the 2nd Meridell war but later was busted by Lisha.
  • Princess Amria, eldest Princess of Sakmet was shown in the Lost desert plot.
  • Isca and Caylis are two maraquan sisters from the Curse of Maraqua plot.
  • Purrow, a rumored high-ranking member of the Aisha Thieves, a group of Neopian cat-burglars.
  • Meesha, another member of the Aisha Thieves, but supposedly not as experienced as Purrow.

Blumaroo

Blumaroos are vaguely kangaroo-like shrow in air, reminiscent of the popular Winnie the Pooh character Tigger (who also bounced around on his tail), and were first introduced on May 25, 2000. They have long, floppy ears, strong tails to bounce on (rare is the picture of a Blumaroo on its feet) and a long, almost tapir-like face. They are generally fun-loving creatures who like nothing better than a festival or to bounce around while singing cheery tunes. This explains the somewhat carnival-like appearance of their native home, Roo Island. It is hinted that Blumaroos love nachos.

In the Neopets TCG, Blumaroos are associated with the element of air.

As of July 2005, the Blumaroo is ranked about 32nd out of 50 species, with over 1.7 million created. They have been featured in 2+ pieces of merchandise so far, not including the Neopets TCG game.

They can be painted in 35+ different colors, including the seahorse-inspired Maraquan style, and Halloween, looking like Count Von Roo himself.

Blumaroos are native to a small island appropriately named Roo Island, which is just off the coast of Neopia Central. The Island is ruled by the naïvely benevolent King Roo and his possibly malevolent councillor, Advisor Broo. While most Blumaroos are inherently pleasant creatures, there are a few evildoers among them. Most famous of these are Commander Garoo, second only to Dr. Sloth himself in power. He is the sixth Defenders of Neopia mission. There is also Count Von Roo, a vampire who rises at about midnight to fight in the Battledome and dice with the extremely late-nighters. To win his game will gain you a Neoboards Avatar and a level for your pet, but to lose can have severe consequences. Boris, the Blumaroo of the Meridell plots, hero-worships Count von Roo and dresses like him. Mastermind, the final boss of the evil level of Neoquest 1, is also a Blumaroo, as is the Archmagus of Roo.

As a foil to the playful natures of most Blumaroos, Rohane of NeoQuest II is serious, dashing, and heroic.

Bori

The Bori is the 49th Neopet, and was released on October 13 2004 to coincide with the Terror Mountain plot. Bori are an underground armadillo-like race with fox-like heads and furry bodies who have been kept in an enchanted sleep by some strange forces since Neopia's creation. Only now are they being awoken. Although their claws are sharp enough to penetrate stone, they have timid personalities and dislike coming to the surface.

The plural of Bori is Bori and not, contrary to popular belief, Boris.

In the Neopets TCG, Bori are associated with the element of earth.

Bori is not a limited edition pet, but their promotional colour is their exclusive ice colour, which could only be accessed by users who took part in a Yahoo! Toolbar promotion. As of July 2005, it is ranked about 36th out of 50+ species, with over 1.2 million created. They are quiet and peaceful Neopets. In the popularity page, it teases the Ruki because it is more popular.

Some famous Bori are Armin the Small and the Keeper of Time from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot.

Bruce

The Bruce is one of the original Neopets. It first looked like Bruce Forsyth (an actual photograph), and has been redrawn many times, first to a caricature of Bruce Forsyth, and then a penguin, retaining only the bowtie from its first incarnation, to coincide with the introduction of Terror Mountain on November 16, 2000. Despite their appearance, Bruces are generally good at sports and love to dance, compete in winter games, and eat cold food. They originally came from the snow-covered Terror Mountain region.

In the Neopets TCG, Bruces are associated with the element of light.

Bruces are quite popular on Neopets; as of December 2005, they were the 11th most popular out of 50+ available species. Over 4.3 million have been created.

Some of the most famous ones include Brucey B, the owner of a lucky coin and the penguin who discovered the Lost Desert, and Benney the Blade, a dangerous pirate from the Curse of Maraqua plot. Another famous one is Boochi, who zaps pets with a gun-like device, turning his targets into babies.

Buzz

The Buzz is a dragonfly-like species of Neopet. Buzz (the plural, according to Neopets, is not Buzzes) have excellent eyesight and can fly very quickly, allowing them to easily obtain the berries they love to eat, they are also known to be predatory despite having tiny teeth. They may look mean, but have kind personalities.

When first introduced on January 11, 2000, the pet now called the Buzz was called the Fleye, which looked like a flying eyeball but was changed into reptillian insectoids on July 24, 2000. Despite a later makeover resulting in a rounder and more cuter version, many people still think they look unattractive; they are relatively rare in Neopia, and Buzz are more popular with male players.

In the Neopets TCG, Buzz are associated with the element of darkness.

As of January 2006, the Buzz is ranked about 35th out of 50+ species, with about 1.7 million created.

Chia

Chias are generally playful and friendly little creatures who love to explore. The name Chia may be related to the Chia Pet-like tufts of hair on top of their heads.

The very first Neopet, Thyassa the Chia, was "born" on November 14, 1999 (the day before the site was officially opened). Chias appear to be great favorites with Neopets staff and are available in a wide array of variations (not available to any other pet species) that look like fruits and vegetables. (For example, the Orange Chia looks like an actual orange instead of simply being orange in color.) More recently, Neopets staff have added the Durian and the Carrot Chia. Chias are well known for being the food of Lupes, and perhaps that accounts for the many colours, or rather, flavours, of Chias.

Despite their popularity with the original creators, no recent merchandise based on the Chia has ever been made available. However, when Neopets merchandise was just starting to be released, there were Yellow Chia plushies and Purple Chia plushies. Lack of new merchandise may be due to a legal dispute among Neopets and Joseph Enterprises, Inc over the use of the name "Chia" (the Chia Pet).

Famous Chias include the Chia Clown, one of the easiest of the battledome challengers and what beginners practice on, the Jelly Chia, a member of the Gallery of Evil, Florg, a Mutant Chia who loves nothing better than eating petpets and stars in his own game, Feed Florg, Kasuki-Lu, who is obviously supposed to be a Sumo Wrestler, The fearsome warrior known as the Highland Chia, Adee, the star of the game Ice Cream Machine, and Mika and Carassa, a pair of Chias that live in Terror Mountain and have run a garage sale for years, despite claims they wish to move to warmer climates, arousing some suspicion as to their true motives.Chiazilla is another battledome challenger and appears around the Maraquan ruins area.

They are of roughly average popularity among players. As of July 2005, the Chia is ranked about 27th out of 50+ species. Over 2.1 million have been created.

Chomby

The Chomby is a shy, plant-eating dinosaur who is most happy when munching on leaves and grasses. The weight of a single Chomby moving can cause small earthquakes. As of December 2005, 330,335 of this limited edition pet had been created, giving them a rating of 46th out of 50 species. More Chombys are occasionally released during special events. They originally appeared on March 22nd 2001.

Famous Chombys include the unnamed character from the now-retired game Chomby and the Fungus Balls and the chomby from the band CATFB.

In the Neopets TCG, Chombies are associated with the element of light.

Cybunny

The Cybunny is a limited edition species of Neopet. They look much like rabbits and often live in Neopia's coldest regions, where they can easily camouflage their white fur against the snow and frolic in the winter air. Young Cybunnies generally love to play games. Like real rabbits, they are also known to be very swift.

Because they are limited edition, Cybunnies are rare in Neopia. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain items to change their pets into Cybunnies.

Some famous Cybunnies are Cylara (a space traveler), Sasha (one of the 12 protectors of Altador), and the Easter Cybunny.

In the Neopets TCG, Cybunnies are associated with the element of earth.

As of December 2005, the Cybunny is ranked about 44th out of 50+ species. They were introduced on July 10th, 2000.

Draik

The Draik is a limited edition/restricted species. They look like small dragons and are thought to have originated from Meridell. They almost have feline-like personalities and enjoy hunting small creatures, satisfying their curiosity, and wandering far away from home on extended adventures.

Being limited edition Neopets, Draiks are rarely released, even on Draik Day, their special holiday. You can get a Draik by using a morphing potion (a special potion to change your Neopet), using a Draik Egg and hatching it in the Draik Nest, or by zapping your pet with the Lab Ray.

In the Neopets TCG, Draiks are associated with the element of fire.

As of December 2005, the Draik is ranked about 50th out of 50+ species. Just over 9 thousand have been created. They were originally released on June 25th 2002.

One famous Draik is Valrigard, who was imprisoned in Meridell Castle for a crime that he did not commit. He is the star of the game Escape from Meridell Castle

Swordmaster Talek, of the Curse of Maraqua Plot, is a Draik.

King Terask, an immensely big and strong Draik, is the last enemy to defeat in the game Neoquest II, in two incarnations.

Elephante

The Elephante was first introduced to the site on January 13, 2000. As their name suggests, Elephantes are similar to elephants, the only differences being two small wings (which only allow them to hover for short periods of time) and a rabbit-like fluffy tail. Although cute, they are not completely harmless, being able to shoot objects from their trunks with great accuracy. They are generally kind and generous.

An Elephante and Puppyblew (a Petpet) star in the game 200m Peanut Dash

In the Neopets TCG, Elephantes are associated with the element of air.

As of July 2005, the Elephante is ranked about 26th out of 50+ species. Over 2.1 million have been created.

One famous Elephante is Zombom, an evil sorcerer who must be defeated in the game Neoquest II.

Eyrie

The Eyrie looks basically like an eagle-winged griffin. Eyries live in tropical regions and like to play, but like the griffins, they can be quite fierce and cunning in battle, especially if their territory is ever threatened. They are also known for generally being adventureous, eager to learn, and noble.

In the Neopets TCG, Eyries are associated with the element of air.

Eyries are among the most popular Neopets. As of Janury 2006, they were ranked 7th most popular out of 50+ available species. Over 5.2 million have been created.

It should be noted that oddly, the randomly generated heights applied to all Eyries deviate greatly from the average number of Neopets. Judging from a selected statistic, Eyries are on average the largest of all Neopets, but not generally tall. Flotsams are as large as the average Eyrie's wing.

The pet now called the Eyrie was originally the Cerpull, one of the original pets, which looked more like a dragon than a griffin. It was first changed into the more gentle Tatsu on July 13, 2000, before being completely redesigned to form the current Eyrie on January 26th 2001.

Famous (or rather, infamous) Eyries include Lord Kass, of the Neopian Darigan Citadel. (And the star of his own game, Whack-A-Kass?)

Other Famous Eyries include Cap'n Threelegs, the extremely generous yet gruff owner of Cap'n Threelegs Swashbuckling Academy, Jahbal, the final boss of the normal level of Neoquest 1, Talinia, the archer of NeoQuest II, and Branston, a Cheat! player who thinks quite highly of himself.

Flotsam

The Flotsam is one of the original Neopets, apparently related to another aquatic Neopet, the Jetsam. Dolphin-like in appearance, Flotsams love to swim the Neopian oceans, and are quick to sense danger. They can't breathe water, so they enjoy seeing how far they can dive while holding their breath.

On average, Flotsams are the shortest of all Neopets. The average Flotsam is, judging by a selected statistic, as large as the average Eyrie's wing. This may be due to the fact that the Flotsam was originally a goldfish-like creature that was transformed into a dolphin on June 22, 2000.

In the Neopets TCG, Flotsams are associated with the element of water.

One of the only known famous flotsams is the Maraquan Chef who now resides on Mystery Island. Formerly, he was a strange lobster-like creature.

Flotsams are of average popularity among players. As of January 2006, the Flotsam is ranked about 22nd out of 50+ species. Over 2.7 million have been created.

Gelert

The Gelert is a dog-like species of Neopet whose name comes from a legendary Welsh dog. Gelerts are generally courageous, selfless, faithful, and brave, much like Gelert the greyhound from whom they take their name. They are also known for being easily confused.

The Gelert was originally called the Polypup and released on January 25th 2000. It looked more like a dragon than a dog and had shorter, thicker ears and tail. It also wore a collar, where the current Gelert does not. It was changed into the Gelert, a more greyhound-like creature, on July 19th 2000.

Famous Gelerts include Kanrik the side-changing thief of the "Hannah in the Ice Caves" plot; Prince Tourin, a key character in the videogame Neopets: The Darkest Faerie; and Elwyn the Gelert, who wrote The Gelert Diaries about his advetures on Terror Mountain. A Gelert is also the embodiment of Revenge as one of "The Three," mysterious spirits who haunted Lord Kass and eventually drove him mad. Another popular Gelert is the Gelert Assassin in Neopets: The Darkest Faerie. He serves as one of her most loyal servants.

In the Neopets TCG, Gelerts are associated with the element of fire.

Gelerts are among the most popular Neopets. As of January 2006, they were ranked 6th in popularity out of 52 available species. Over 6.8 million have been created.

Gnorbu

The Gnorbu was the winner of the April Fools Neopet Contest 2005, and was released on January 6th 2006. It is based on the blue Llamameeah that was in the contest. The new version has created controversy and dissatisfaction among Neopians who liked the characteristics of the Llamameeah which were removed in the Gnorbu.

The Gnorbu resembles a llama. They are great jokers, and very social, but dislike it when people do not pronounce the word "Gnorbu" correctly (pronounced NOR-boo). Its name is probably taken from the gnu, which is pronounced "noo."

Grarrl

A Grarrl closely resembles a Tyrannosaurus rex. They come from the Neopian world of Tyrannia, although the Grarrl was one of the original Neopets on the site. They are generally among the strongest and fiercest Neopets and can eat just about anything. They enjoy causing destruction and intimidating other Neopets.

In the Neopets TCG, Grarrls are associated with the element of darkness.

Overall, Grarrls are of roughly average popularity; they are especially popular with male Neopets players. As of July 2005, the Grarrl is ranked about 18th out of 50+ species. Over 3.3 million have been created. The Grarrl has the distinction, along with the Chia, of being one of the first Neopet species ever conceived.

Grarrl characters in Neopia include Galgarath, the General of Lord Darigan's army, and Galem Darkhand the honorless thief, Torakar the Grarrl Gladiator, one of the 12 protectors of Altador, as well as Grarrg the Tyrannian Battlemaster.

In the editorial of neopets.com it is revealed that it is the first drawn neopet.

Grundo

Grundos look like space aliens. They were originally imprisoned by the evil Dr. Sloth, who transformed them into large, intimidating servants/slaves. They are, however, naturally friendly, although not the brightest. They enjoy eating, but put on weight easily.

In the early days of the site, they were originally said to have originated from a far away planet called "Doran", however recently this has been retconned and now Grundos are originally from Neopia's solitary moon - Kreludor. Another aspect of Grundos that they once possessed was is that they could only speak in backwards English (IE - "olleh" meant "hello").

Grundos are unique among the various species of Neopets in that they must be adopted from the Virtupets Space Station (instead of created in the usual way). There they are available in seven different colors instead of the four available to other pets. The reason for this unusual situation is that they were originally adopted by players as part of one of Neopets' stories, in order to put a stop to one of Dr. Sloth's evil schemes. They were first put up for adoption on October 24, 2000.

Some famous Grundos are Gorix, partner to Cylara, Blarthrox, Grimilix, Tazzalor, and Zyrolon, four Virtupets producers from the old Neopet v2 plot, Zargrold, a player in the Gormball game, Zygorax, the star of the game Evil Fuzzles From Beyond the Stars, and Gargarox Isafuhlarg, the cook at the Grundos Cafe in the Space Station.

In the Neopets TCG, Grundos are associated with the element of light.

As of January 2006, the Grundo ranked 10th out of 50+ species on the site. Over 5.1 million have been created. They were made available for adoption on August 24th, 2000.

Hissi

The Hissi is a snake-like Neopet with wings. It was released May 4, 2005. Hissi have acute vision and a keen sense of smell which makes them extremely good at games of hide and seek.

Because they are limited edition, not very many are created at the moment. As of July 2005, they are about the 48th most popular out of the 51+ existing Neopets, with just over 100,000 created.

Ixi

The Ixi is basically a goat/deer-like herbivore. They originally came from the Neopian world of Meridell and were the 46th species introduced on the site. Before the introduction of the Yurble and Ruki in May and July of 2004, Ixi enjoyed the status of newest species for almost two years. They were originally released on July 11th 2002. In general, they are curious, dainty, and enjoy playing hide and seek.

Famous Ixis include Nabile, from the Lost Desert plot, and Sinsi, who runs a game called Shapeshifter in Meridell.

In the Neopets TCG, Ixis are associated with the element of earth.

Ixi are among the most popular species, particularly among female players. As of January 2006, the Ixi ranked about 9th out of 50+ species on the site. Over 5.1 million have been created.

Jetsam

Jetsams are shark-like creatures, possibly related to the similarly aquatic Flotsam. They tend to be unfriendly and are powerful fighters. The Jetsam was one of the original Neopets.

Due to their habitat and food source loss during the destruction of Maraqua, they are limited edition. A few may be made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain items to change their pets into Jetsams.

In the Neopets TCG, Jetsams are associated with the element of water.

As of January 2006, the Jetsam ranked about 43rd out of 50+ species on the site. About 725,000 have been created. Originally, Jetsam resembled tiny piranha - but was changed into sharks on June 22nd 2000.

One famous Jetsam is Spectre, the once said world-champion Cheat! player.

Also you can get a secret avatar if you feed an aquatic petpet to a Jetsam.

JubJub

Image:Jubjub brown baby.jpg JubJubs look like furry balls of fluff with large feet and round eyes. Most JubJubs have black eyes and orange feet, although this may vary when a JubJub is "painted" to be a different color other than the standard red, yellow, green, or blue. JubJubs can be painted many of the same colors as other Neopets, and more exotic, JubJub-specific colors are possible. These include Coconut in which the JubJub looks like a coconut, and Garlic which causes it to resemble a bud of garlic.

JubJubs are generally shy creatures. When threatened, they can curl into a ball and roll with astonishing speed. They can also make a deafening screech to drive off attackers. There has been some question as to whether JubJubs are related to the toy known as the Fuzzle, as the Fuzzles are similar to JubJubs in appearance. However, an entry in the Neopets help files denounces the rumor that Fuzzles are baby JubJubs, and explains that they are just toys.

The JubJub was originally called the JibJib and had a slightly different appearance. The JibJib was one of the site's original pets. (The name was changed, for reasons unexplained, on August 23, 2000.) The JubJub attained its current name from the beast called the JubJub Bird in the Lewis Carroll poem, Jabberwocky; however, the Neopian JubJub does not resemble a bird in the least.

There are few famous JubJubs in Neopia compared to celebrities of other species. One JubJub known by almost all players is the Shop Wizard, who appears on the shop search engine page. Other well-known JubJubs include JarbJarb the Tyrannian JubJub, and Boraxis the Healer from the on-site NeoQuest RPG game. Oddly, all three of these JubJubs are yellow. JubJubs star in two games, JubJub Blackjack and Jubble Bubble. Also, Jub Zambra, a Cobrall Charmer, is a member of the band "Jub Zambra and the Cobrall Charmers."

In the Neopets TCG, JubJubs are associated with the element of air.

As of January 2006, the JubJub ranked about 12th out of 50+ species on the site. Over 4.8 million have been created.

Kacheek

The Kacheek looks like a cross between a teddy bear and a mouse. Kacheeks are generally pleasant and are described on the Neopets site as fun-loving, calm, peaceful, and modest. They inhabit lush meadows, although they enjoy climbing things, and avoid violence whenever possible.

The Kacheek was first known as the Badeek, one of the original pets on the site. It wore dark glasses and a less cheerful expression, possibly as a "bad seed" parody of Pikachu.

In the Neopets TCG, Kacheeks are associated with the element of light.

Famous Kacheeks include

  • The Breadmaster, who sells bread and other bakery items in Neopia Central
  • Alton Moughbry, who operates the game Potato Counter
  • Albert, who was morphed into a mutant pet by the Esophagor, a monster in the Haunted Woods
  • Samrin, the PetPet-protecting hero of the game "Extreme Herder"
  • Eliv Thade, a spectral Kacheek who stars as the villain of his own anagram game
  • Florin, guardian of the forests and fields of Altador and one of its twelve protectors

Games featuring Kacheeks include Kacheek Seek in which a user can play hide-and-seek with his or her pet, and Kacheekers-- the Neopian version of checkers.

As of January 2006, over 9.5 million Kacheeks had been created, placing it at third most popular Neopet. Consequently, Kacheeks have been used heavily in Neopets marketing, and much "real world" Kacheek merchandise exists.

Kau

The Kau, unsurprisingly, looks like a cow (the name is also pronounced the same way). Kaus generally move in herds and enjoy singing (although they can only "moo"). They are shy, but have no problem using their horns if threatened.

Originally, the pet now known as the Kau was named Macy Gray and was designed to look like the singer carrying a ray gun. It was one of the original pets on the site. Whether for copyright reasons or because the Macy Gray was not intended to be more than a passing joke, it was changed to the Kau fairly quickly on July 26th 2000.

In the Neopets TCG, Kaus are associated with the element of earth.

As of July 2005, the Kau ranked about 20th out of 50+ species on the site. Over 3.2 million have been created.

Famous Kaus include Kauvara the potion-maker and the fortune-teller from the Lost Desert Plot.

Kiko

Kikos are amphibious Neopets who resemble small floating spheres with wide eyes and flipper-like, clawed hands. All Kikos wear bandages on their heads and have a single curl of hair. As babies, they cannot leave the water for long periods of time, and they like to remain near it as adults. They can breathe equally well in water and air. Although their flipper-like hands appear weak, they can be used to propel the Kiko at high speeds while in water.

The Kiko was one of the original pets on the site.

Despite not being hugely popular among players, Kikos are one of the few Neopets species to receive their own "Mini-World" in Neopia. Kiko Lake is home to 9,400 Neopets, 92% of whom are Kikos. (The other inhabitants are 3% Jetsam and 5% "other.") Kikos have also been given some exotic colors given to few other pets. They are the only pet besides the JubJub who can become the colors "Clay" or "Garlic," the only one besides the Chia who can become "Chokato" (a Neopian fruit that is a combination of chocolate and a tomato), and one of a handful of pets who can be painted "Sponge."

Kikos have been much less heavily merchandised in the "real world" than other pets, although they were featured as a plushie in a Neopets McDonald's promotion.

Famous Kikos include Niten Hiroru the ninja and Cap'n Dread, the skeletal Kiko who destroyed the Neopian world of Maraqua. Kikos are also featured in the memory game Kiko Match II.

As of January 2006, Kikos hold the position of 40th most popular in terms of number created, with a little over 1 million in existence. Kikos' status as limited edition pets (meaning they can not ordinarily be created by players) may account for their low popularity. A few Kikos are released on the site for special occasions such as Kiko Day. However, Kiko were changed to a limited edition pet relatively late in the site's history, around the time Kiko Lake was introduced. Some users surmise that the change was made to artificially make the Kiko are more desirable Neopet. Players can also change their pets into Kikos via the Secret Laboratory Ray or certain items.

Koi

Friendly, outgoing, inventive fish, Koi (the name is both singular and plural) were the natives of the underwater city of Maraqua prior to its destruction. Their many inventions include the Utilty Fish, described as 'a Petpet and a household helper rolled into one'.

Koi were originally similar to humanoid goldfish, but were later changed to a fish that shares traits with siamese fighting fish and real-life koi.

Originally freely available when it was added on October 6, 2000, the destruction of Old Maraqua reduced their numbers and made them limited edition, meaning that Koi are rare in Neopia - even now that Maraqua has been rebuilt. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain items to change their pets into Koi.

Famous Koi include King Kelpbeard, ruler of the city of Maraqua during the Curse of Maraqua plot.

In the Neopets TCG, Koi are associated with the element of water.

As of January 2006, Koi are the 47th most common Neopet, with just 300,000+ created. They were released on October 6th, 2000.

Korbat

Korbats look like white bats with colored wings and ears, although certain special versions come in other colors. With small, pointed teeth, they look vaguely vampiric but are generally friendly. They are nocturnal and are usually inquisitive and mischievous. They have an impressive sense of smell and are happiest during a full moon.

In the Neopets TCG, Korbats are associated with the element of darkness.

Korbats are of average popularity on the site, but they are particularly popular with male players. The Korbat was one of the original pets on the site.

Famous Korbats include Koya (from the Neopets Trading Card Game), Barallus from the game Cellblock, and Lord Darigan, though whether or not Darigan is truly a Korbat is uncertain. However, on the recent Korbat Day, there was a Caption Contest with Lord Darigan and three other Korbats. In a past Neopian Times editorial, Dr. Sloth is described as a mutated korbat, although this is most likely a joke.

The Korbat is the about 28th most common Neopet as of July 2005, with over 2 million created.

Kougra

The Kougra looks like a small tiger, though its name comes from that of another large cat, the cougar. Kougras come from the Neopian World of Mystery Island, where they enjoy eating fruit, despite their carnivorous appearance. The stripes on their bodies serve to camouflage them in the wilderness, and they enjoy pouncing on moving objects - although they're never quite sure what to do with their prey once it's been caught.

In the Neopets TCG, Kougras are associated with the element of fire.

Kougras were released on August 10, 2000, after winning a contest for the pet from the newly discovered Mystery Island the day before. They were redesigned in the summer of 2004, but many players were unhappy with the Kougra's "makeover." In August, they were given the opportunity to vote on a second redesign of the species.

Famous Kougras include: Jake the Explorer, who got his face on the "Islandberry Crunch" cereal box, and his own card. He is by far Neopia's most famous Kougra, possibly most popular neopet ;) Commander gormos, a Kougra who hhad a paw in defeating Dr. Sloth There are several "real life" Kougra items, mostly plushies.

As of January 2006, Kougras are rated the second most popular species with 9.8 million created.

Krawk

Resembling large lizards or crocodiles in appearance, most Krawks come from Krawk Island. Krawks are generally loyal but mischievous, and boast many sharp teeth, an accute sense of smell, and excellent vision. Krawks evolved from Tyrannian Petpets that were driven out of Tyrannia and onto an island in the sea. Krawks hate being reminded of their origins.

Petpet Krawks are transformed into Neopets using the fungus from the Krawk Island "Fungus Cave". In game terms, this means that they are "restricted" species and cannot be created by players in the usual way. As a result, they are the rarest species of Neopet but remain highly sought-after. Their transformation from Petpets was first introduced on January 10th, 2002.

In the Neopets TCG, Krawks are associated with the element of darkness.

As of July 2005, roughly 2,200 have been created, making them the least populated Neopet and the winner of the "Wooden Spoon Award".

Kyrii

Kyrii (the word serves as both singular and plural, though sometimes the Island Mystic says "Kyries") are pack animals (which bear a strong resemblance to ferrets) but get along well with other species. Their origin is uncertain; they are said to have appeared in Neopia without any notice one day, where they immediately started to make friends. They love to explore, but get very uspet if their hair gets dirty. They resemble a squirrel, but with a head shape similar to a Bull Terrier's.

In the Neopets TCG, Kyrii are associated with the element of fire.

At first, the pet now called the Kyrii was known as the Fuzio (one of the original pets on the site), but it was changed because of copyright issues. The Fuzio had a very different look from the Kyrii; it was basically a ball of fluff (similar to the JubJub), with floating, detached gloves and sneakers. Fuzios were social and fun-loving, and they enjoyed skateboarding according to Neopets' profile of the species. The Fuzio's new look was chosen by a poll of Neopets users, who had five new species of pets from which to choose the Fuzio's replacement. The Kyrii won the majority of the vote, and on February 9, 2001, the Fuzio was renamed and all images of it were replaced (see Neopets news from February 1-14, 2001). The only remotely famous Fuzio in Neopia was David Fuzio, founder of the company Yippee! on the Neopets StockMarket along with Jubjub Yang. (Yippee! is a parody of Yahoo! and its founders David Filo and Jerry Yang.)

One of the most famous Kyrii is Jacques, Garin's friend from the Curse of Maraqua plot. Other famous Kyrii include the mysterious Kyrii Seer from the original Meridell plot; Capara the (very bad) Cheat! player; and prince Jazan from the Lost Desert Plot, who was both a villain in his cursed form and a hero. Also, Prince Jazan's father, the evil Razul, may be a Kyrii, but because of the fact that he is a fiery skeletal demon, this piece of information may be inaccurate.

As of January 2006, over 1.9 million Kyrii have been created, making them the 33rd most popular Neopet.

Lenny

The Lenny is a bird-like Neopet, possibly based on a stork. There are also versions available that look like different bird species, such as peacocks, flamingos, and macaws. They are generally curious, clever, and intelligent. They can fly, but only for short distances.

Lennies are among the rarest species, even though they are not limited edition. However, some Lenny owners tend to be particularly proud of their unusual pets. Many people like making jokes about this "nerdy" Neopet.

The Lenny was one of the original pets on the site.

In the Neopets TCG, Lennies are associated with the element of air.

The Lenny is the 41st most common Neopet with 1 million+ existing as of January 2006.

The Lenny from "Lenny Conundrum", a challenging trivia and puzzle game, is quite famous.

Lupe

The Lupe looks like a wolf and its name probably comes from the Latin word lupus ("wolf"). Lupes make particularly loyal pets. They are known for their love of eating Chias. They are instinctually good at hunting and protecting friends.

The Lupe first appeared on January 13, 2000.

In the Neopets TCG, Lupes are associated with the element of earth.

Lupes are among the most popular species. As of January 2006, they were the fourth most popular pet with approximately 8.4 million created. Some Neopet users believe Lupes and Gelerts are related. They are also among the most popular pets for roleplaying. They were originally introduced on January 13 2000.

Famous Lupes include the assassinated King Coltzan III of the Lost Desert; Jeran, a knight of the Neopian world of Meridell; The Ghost Lupe, a so-called "Evil" Neopian who may heal your pets in a random event; Captain Scarblade, the pirate from the Curse of Maraqua storyline; Balthazar the Bounty Hunter, an evil faerie hunter who is a prominent member of the Gallery of Evil; Tormund, a knight-in-training who is due to star in the upcoming Neopets: The Darkest Faerie video game, King Altador, one of the twelve protectors of Altador; and Tomos, the Desert Scarab from the new "Lost Desert" storyline.

Lutari

The Lutari was released on April 18, 2006. Currently it is not necessary to pay to own a lutari. Lutari Island is not assured or confirmed yet. With Lutari Day being over, it is assumed you cannot create any more of them. There appears to be strange difficulties with pounding these pets. Lutaris are also limited edition.

Moehog

The Moehog looks something like a warthog. Moehogs originally came from the mountainous parts of Neopia, where they carried objects for lazy Skeiths. After a while, however, they began to set up their own communities elsewhere, but they remain eager to help. Young Moehogs generally enjoy snorting up dust clouds and making noise. They were introduced on July 5th 2000.

In the Neopets TCG, Moehogs are associated with the element of darkness.

Some famous Moehogs include Judge Hog of Defenders of Neopia, Agent 00 Hog from the Cheat game, The Bringer of Night from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot, and Morguss, who fought with Lord Kass in the Battle for Meridell and has thus earned her place in the Gallery of Evil.

As of January 2006, the Moehog is the 39th most popular Neopet with over 1 million Moehogs existing.

Mynci

The monkey-like Mynci is a fun-loving creature with great agility and balance.

In the Neopets TCG, Myncis are associated with the element of earth.

Myncis are popular among players; as of January 2006, they are ranked 13th out of 50+ available species with over 4.8 million created.

Mynci is the Welsh word for the metal hames in a harness, though it's likely Neopets confused it with the similar Welsh word "mwnci", meaning monkey. Both are homophones of the English word "monkey" when used in Welsh but according to the Neopets pronuncation guide the pronunciation of the Neopet is "mwn-sea".

The pet now known as the Mynci was originally the Mellish, one of the original pets. It was reworked into the Mynci due to lack of popularity (which was probably due to the fact that it looked like a cartoon person and not a pet) on June 29 2000.

Well-known Myncis include members of the band M*YNCI, Master Vex, the heroic prison warden of the Darigan Citadel and the champion of Cellblock, the much more under-handed Hadrak, The mischievous villain Valin the Quick from the Hannah and the Ice Caves plot and Hubert the owner of the hot dog stand. The pop band called M*YNCI is a spoof of N*SYNC.

As of July 2005, the Peophin ranked about 22nd out of 50+ species on the site. Over 2.5 million have been created.

Poogle

The Poogle is a rather pudgy four-legged species that may be very loosely based on the Poodle, and as the "About" image on the "Create A Pet" page says, it is a rumor that poogles are somehow related to Kacheeks. They originally came from the northern Terror Mountain region. Although they are cute in appearance, they have very sharp teeth. They were introduced July 14th 2000.

In the Neopets TCG, Poogles are associated with the element of water.

Because they are limited edition, Poogles are rare in Neopia. A few are made available on the site periodically; players can also use certain items to change their pets into Poogles.

Poogle Racing is a time-honored sport among Neopians. Poogles also used to star in a game called Poogle Solitaire before it was taken off of the site.

The only known famous poogle is the Malevolent Sentient Poogle Plushie.

Because they're limited edition, not many Poogles exist. They are the 45th most common as of January 2006, with just 400,000+ created.

A Pteri stars in the game Pterattack.

In the Neopets TCG, Pteris are associated with the element of air.

As of July 2005, the Pteri is ranked about 29th out of 50+ species on the site. Over 1.9 million have been created.

One famous Quiggle is Quaglor the Intrepid of the popular puzzle game Faerie Caves II. Also, Morris of the Meridell plots is a Quiggle, though judging by his false ears, he would rather be a Lupe.

Quiggles are the about 25th most common Neopet as of July 2005. Over 2.2 million have been created.

Ruki

The Ruki is the second insect-like Neopet, but is more clearly an insect than the Buzz; according to staff it was intended to resemble a praying mantis. Rukis originally came from the Lost Desert region. They are protected from the environment by a layer of armored exoskeleton and possess great stamina that allows them to travel great distances.

The Ruki is the 48th Neopets species, released on July 29, 2004.

The Shoyru's name may have come from the "Sho-ryu-ken", a powerful attack from the video game Street Fighter 2.

Skeith

The Skeith is a large, fat dragon-like creature with small wings and a spiked tail. Skeiths are generally strong, lazy and unpleasant, although individual members of the species may behave quite differently. They will eat practically anything, so owners learn to keep them well fed. Otherwise, their Skeith may randomly eat items from their inventory! However, this trait also means that Skeiths are easy to feed as they can be fed any item on the site.

The Skeith was one of the original pets on the site.

In the Neopets TCG, Skeiths are associated with the element of darkness.

The most famous Skeiths in Neopia are the brothers Hagan and Skarl, the kings of Brightvale and Meridell respectively. The older of the two, Hagan, is intelligent and generous, while Skarl is ill-tempered and greedy. (In fact, one of the games on the site is called "Grumpy Old King" and involves telling a joke to Skarl in an attempt to cheer him up.) Skeiths are associated with money in Neopia, and one with whom all players are familiar is the National Neopian Bank manager. The Castle Treasurer of Meridell is a Skeith named Snargan, who plays the gambling game "Double or Nothing" with players, and Gordos the Skeith is the treasurer of Altador and one of its protectors. Yet another money-related Skeith celebrity is hunchbacked Greed of the trio of spirits known as "The Three." The evil Malkus Vile, who was involved in the theft of King Coltzan's Crown, is also a Skeith. Haskol, one of Lord Darigan's soldiers and an opponent in Cellblock is a Skeith. The most famous Tonu in Neopia is General Dacon from the Lost Desert plot.

The place of about 48th most common Neopet is held by the Tonu, with 217,000+ created as of January 2006.

Tuskaninny

Tuskaninnies look like walruses. Despite their names, they usually have no tusks (the Tyrannian Tuskaninny and the Mutant Tuskaninny are exceptions). The reason for this misnomer is because they were named by a Neopets user in a competition and not by the Neopets team itself. They are often found in the water or lounging in the sun and are generally friendly, although they can become fighters.

The Tuskaninny was one of the original pets on the site.

One well-known Tuskaninny is Colin, star of the Hangman-like game Cliffhanger, who lives on Terror Mountain

Usul

The Usul, one of the original pets on the site, resembles a cross between a rabbit and a large squirrel with a colored ruff and a bow in its tail. The species name possibly comes from a combination of "usagi" (the Japanese word for rabbit) and "squirrel." Also, in Ottoman and Turkish music theory, an usul is a rhythmic pattern that forms the framework of a composition. Usuls prefer to live in trees; they love visitors and are very friendly.

Usuls have their own series of dolls, the Barbie-like Usukis. (There is also a Quiggle-inspired Quiguki, which is intended as a joke.) Every year on August 20, the site holds an imaginary event called UsukiCon, which may be a reference to UshiCon. UsukiCon consists of Neopets.com releasing several new Usuki doll sets and Usuki-themed items.

Usuls can be "painted" a wide variety of colors, including the Usul-only color of "Usuki." When painted Usuki, female Usuls resemble the "Magic Hair Usuki" doll, and males look like one of the male Usuki dolls. (Incidentally, Usuls - and other pets - painted "Royal" also have separate looks for males and females.)

In the Neopets TCG, Usuls are associated with the element of earth.

Possibly the most famous Usul in Neopia is Hannah, who has been featured in two games of her own ("Hannah and the Pirate Caves" and "Hannah and the Ice Cave"), the Ice Caves plot, and a series of the Neopets Trading Card Game. Other famous Usuls include the male Garin the pirate from the Curse of Maraqua plot, Sally the Usul who is the self-titled "greatest Usuki collector in the world" and has her own Neopedia article, the malevolent Shadow Usul, Princess Vyssa of the desert kingdom of Sakhmet, Gormball champion Ursula Usul, the Tyrannian Usul GoGoGo player Uggsul, athletic Usinda, and Gilly the Usul of "The Castle of Eliv Thade." Incidentally, you cannot paint an usul with a "Shadow" Paintbrush, as the Neopets administrators did not wish to have a confusion between the Shadow Usul and shadow usuls.

Usuls are extremely popular with female players. They are currently the 14th most popular pet, with over 4.8 million created as of January 2006. They have also been heavily merchandised.

Wocky

Wockies are cat- or fox-like pets, with small manes of fur. Wockies are generally brave, adventurous, and daring. They love to explore and search for hidden treasures. The Wocky was one of the original pets on the site.

In the Neopets TCG, Wockies are associated with the element of fire.

Wockies are of roughly average popularity among players, with over 4.1 million in existence as of January 2006. They hold the place of 16th most common. They also get along with Xweetok.

Xweetok

The Xweetok (pronounced like "Zwee-Tok") is a chipmunk-like pet that was released on November 30, 2005. As of December 20, 2005, over 1 million have been made - in 41st place for popularity. They are currently in 22nd place with almost 3 million created. In the fictional world of Neopia, Xweetoks get along quite nicely with Usuls, but tend to be wary of predatory species such as the Kougra. They are forest-dwelling creatures with lightning-like agility that make their homes in trees, but if there's no room in a tree, they make their homes in burrows. Xweetoks are supposed to have very soft fur, and because of this they are great to hug!

Yurble

The Yurble looks somewhat like an extremely furry bear, with curled horns or else ears that resemble horns. Yurbles are generally curious and love to eat. They were first released on May 28 2004.

The tax beast, which appears randomly and steals your Neopoints, looks remotely like a green Yurble, although the chance of it being one is small since the tax beast was on the Neopets website before the Yurble was created. The Halloween Yurble appears similar to the tax beast in color, also. Another famous Yurble is the Yurble foreman/cook in the scroll repository of the Lost Desert Plot, now the janitor in the Hall of Heroes (Altador).

Yurbles were first "discovered" May 28, 2004. They were the 47th species to be released.

In the Neopets TCG, Yurbles are associated with the element of earth.

Zafara

The adventurous Zafara is rumored to bring good luck to its owner and were released on May 25th 2000. • Ace, the pilot in the game Advert Attack, a game created by Virtupets. The game that Ace was in is also called Super Race.
  • Zafara Double Agent, a spy for Lord Kass

April Fools Pet Designs

On April 1, 2005, the Neopets staff played a joke on members where they released approximately 50 new Neopets. The complete list of fake Neopets can be found here.

By popular demand, one of the fake pets was made into a real one. Other popular fake pets are being made into PetPets. Players were able to vote on which fake pet they wanted to see released as a real pet. The winner of the contest was the Llama-like pet, the "Lamameeah", but was redrawn and renamed the "Gnorbu".
