ReBirth

Image:Rebirth rb-338 screenshot.png ReBirth RB-338 is a software synthesizer for PC and Mac and it was among the first software synthesizers ever. Rebirth was developed by a Swedish company called Propellerhead Software in 1997. The same company later developed Reason, which now is their flagship software. The current version of Rebirth is 2.0.1.

The Data Becker company released a cut-rate version called Rhythm Machines ReBirth One which found wide distribution in American big box electronics retailers, but the .RBS files exported by the original ReBirth were not compatible with this version. This made the extensive internet archives of ReBirth songs useless for the Data Becker product.

As of September 1st, 2005, support and development of ReBirth is discontinued. It can be downloaded for free. However, the original software, even after installation, required the presence of the CD in the tray to prevent piracy. The free download version still has this requirement.

Rebirth emulates (rebirths) the sound of some classic pieces of Roland hardware:

Each device has its own pattern selector, a feature the original devices are lacking. This allows fast switches between different musical sequences, and you wouldn't for instance have to reprogram the TB-303 (a procedure that take some time) just to play some different notes. This feature has been adopted in some of Reason's devices.

Rebirth also features mixers, a pattern controlled filter (PCF) and some standard effects like delay, compressor and distortion and is all wrapped up in a nice looking graphical interface.

One other feature of Rebirth is its built-in support for mods. A mod is a user modification that allows the modder to replace the drummachine samples and to change the graphical interface.
