Redcar and Cleveland is a unitary authority borough in the former county of Cleveland, consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton, and Loftus. The area is historically part of Yorkshire, and is now part of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. It had a resident population of 139,132 in 2001. It is represented in Parliament by the barrister Vera Baird (Labour) for the Redcar constituency and by Ashok Kumar (Labour) for the Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency.

The district was created in 1974 as Langbaurgh, after the ancient Langbaurgh wapentake of Yorkshire. It took in part of Teesside county borough, along with Guisborough, Loftus, Saltburn and Marske-by-the-Sea and Skelton and Brotton urban districts. The Laughbaurgh district was a non-metropolitan district in the new non-metropolitan county of Cleveland. It is part of the Tees Valley area.

Cleveland was abolished on April 1, 1996, its districts becoming unitary authorities. At this time Langbaurgh was renamed Redcar and Cleveland.
