Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks is a fictional animated character in the Nickelodeon animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence.
Sandy is a very talented and athletic squirrel born in the state of Texas, who moved to Bikini Bottom in the South Pacific Ocean underneath Bikini Atoll, for as yet unrevealed reasons. She lives in an air-filled habitat structure called the "Treedome" (a plexiglass dome containing a tree, living quarters and various other land plants). When outside of the Treedome, Sandy wears an air-filled diving outfit that looks much like an astronaut's space suit; while in her Treedome, she wears a purple bikini with a purple skirt-like ring around her middle and with green underneath. Physically, Sandy is one of the strongest creatures (along with Larry Lobster) in Bikini Bottom. She claims to be stronger than Larry, and the strongest one in Bikini Bottom and she can even pull down gigantic ships and boats from the surface of the ocean as seen in Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm. She is believed to be born on May 21, 1984.
Sandy's interests include her native state of Texas, acorns, karate, various forms of athletics, pecan pies, fly fishing and science. Related to the latter, Sandy is an esteemed squirrel scientist, and has built her own rocket ship. She's even gone to the moon, but unlike SpongeBob, does not believe in moon creatures. Recently, Sandy also has taken (and got carried away with) explosive special effects in filmmaking.
Sandy also has a large variety of pets, including caterpillars, snakes, crickets, mice, and birds, among others. A caterpillar named Wormy she owned once caused a riot among the citizens of Bikini Bottom, after it transformed into a butterfly and escaped her Treedome.
Sandy is a good friend of the sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, and enjoys various activities with him (including karate). Sandy introduced to SpongeBob (and the other citizens of Bikini Bottom) the holiday of Christmas.
Sandy is somewhat sensitive about her minority status as an air-breathing land creature (the only other air-breathing animals seen in the series are whales). She's very friendly and has an upbeat and positive attitude, but can be very fierce when angered. Sandy is an avowed Texas partisan, and speaks with a strong southern accent (although whether her accent is genuinely "Texan" is debatable); she takes strong offense at any negative comments about Texas.
Trivia
- Sandy was the first character to introduce Christmas to Bikini Bottom.
- Her full name is Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks, an obvious double-entendre cousin to the double-meaning place name "Bikini Bottom". Her name was revealed in the episode Patrick SmartPants where the smart Patrick called Sandy "Sandra".
- Sandy's pet worm became a butterfly and chased the citizens of Bikini Bottom, but she trapped it in a jar and was considered a hero.
- She can teleport atoms between any two points in an instant, and can also teleport both SpongeBob and Squidward but can't yet teleport Gary due to his atomic structure as a snail.
- For Halloween, Sandy was a goldfish in a bowl (her air helmet was the bowl). Nobody else got it.
- Since Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are just a wee bit too old for action scenes, Sandy has recently taken on the role of Mermaid Man's stunt double, and uses karate against Kelp Thing.
- Sandy Cheeks dared SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward to go up on dry land in one episode, on the island of Bikini Atoll, just above Bikini Bottom. For this sequence the characters turned into live-action stick puppets, and Sandy's puppet looked like a TY Beanie Baby Squirrel toy.
- Sandy the Squirrel enjoys sky-diving and jumping out of planes and just about any kind of daredevil activity.
- Sliding down Sand Mountain is one of her favorite activities.
- Sandy is offended by squirrel jokes as well as any negative comments about Texas.
- It is widely believed that Spongebob meets Sandy when he already knows her in Ripped Pants. However, Ripped Pants comes after Teatime at the Treedome, where he meets her wrestling a giant clam.
- In Season 3 and 4 episodes, Sandy has an acorn badge. In Seasons 1 and 2 she does not. However, the badge was first seen in "Pressure", a season 2 episode.
- Sandy's arms appear less muscular than SpongeBob's arms most of the time (although they actually are much stronger), and sometimes she is shown with huge muscular arms.
- An authentic italian Sandy Cheeks Charm, was made in Italy by Caso Doro.
- When she hibernates, she becomes an enormous, ugly, bear-like creature (Possibly due to the amount of food that she eats before hibernating).
- Sandy is more of a minor character in Season 3, yet is gaining somewhat more attention in recent Season 4 episodes.
- Sandy was originally supposed to appear in "Where's Gary?" but did not make an appearance.
- Sandy has never even officially met Pearl before, yet Pearl was at the party in the episode Texas.
- She has a built in escape pod in her house and can use it to go back to Texas, whenever she feels that she should evacuate.
- SpongeBob and Patrick pulled a prank in which he put lots of portraits of Patrick all over Sandy's house.
- Sandy once had to fight Patrick to get SpongeBob to the doctor's office.
- Sandy likes to drink spicy sauces and even consumes Volcano Sauce.
