Geography

Location

Bikini Bottom is located at the Bottom of the Pacific Ocean, next to its signature island, Bikini Atoll, according to Stephen Hillenburg. In the episode, Pranks a Lot, when Sandy evacuated to Texas, she was seen flying east from the Pacific Ocean. In the Employee of the Month computer game, a fish mentions that Bikini Bottom is located in the Pacific Ocean. In The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, when SpongeBob was singing the "Goofy Goober Rock", the camera rose out of the water into outer space. When it did, it came out of the Pacific Ocean.

Cityscape

The city is divided into various districts, including Downtown Bikini Bottom, Goo Lagoon, Sand Mountain, Jellyfish Fields, Kelp Forest, The Flying Dutchman's Graveyard, Residents Row (SpongeBob's / Patrick's / Squidward's homes, as seen in SpongeBob SquarePants:Revenge Of The Flying Dutchman), Make Out Reef, Ancient Mariner Valley (the location of Neptune's Paradise, as mentioned in the SpongeBob SquarePants: Employee Of The Month computer game}. The city is divided by the main road, Conch Street which runs from downtown and past the homes of SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick, and even both Krusty Krab restaurants, The Chum Bucket and The Reef Theatre cinemas. The road also intersects with Barnacle Road and Coral Avenue. Anchor Way is not far off from Conch Street. Towns and cities near Bikini Bottom (within driving distance or close enough to be included in local news) include Rock Bottom, Bass Vegas (city similar to Las Vegas, Nevada), Ukulele Bottom, Atlantis - King Neptune's residence, Leisure Village, Tentacle Acres (aka Squidville - Octopi only) and Bottoms Up/Waverly Hills (a wealthy district on the cliffs of the Kelp Forest), plus Bikini Atoll on the surface. Shell City (also on the surface) is six days away however through a long and dangerous route beyond The County Line (the boundary of Bikini Bottom).

Climate

Since Bikini Bottom is in the Pacific Ocean below Bikini Atoll, Bikini Bottom could have a sunny subtropical climate, despite also receiving rain and snow from the nearby icebergs and having their own ski resort which sometimes receives snow. All the clouds are shaped like flowers (most likely an arbitrary comparison to undersea algae).

People

Population

The population of Bikini Bottom is uncertain; however, the creator of the show, Stephen Hillenburg, confirmed that Bikini Bottom is a large city, similar to Los Angeles. However, the physical look and feel of Bikini Bottom suggests that it is in fact a much smaller city.

Demographics

Bikini Bottom's populace, like that of the rest of the series, consists of various anthropomorphic fish, whales, crabs, sponges, octopi, starfish, anchovies, lobster, sharks, and most other forms of sea life. Some forms of sea life, like jellyfish, snails, and worms aren't sentient however, and are treated like pets or wild animals; an example of this is SpongeBob's pet snail, Gary. The first known land creature to live in Bikini Bottom was before the 12th century (Bikini Bottom was then known as Bikini Bottomshire, as seen in "Dunces and Dragons"), the Dark Knight, an ancestor of Sandy Cheeks. Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas, is the only land creature seen living in modern Bikini Bottom.

"Animals"

"Animals" in Bikini Bottom are similar to those "animals" in the real world. Jellyfish - Jellyfish are similar to bees. There are four types of jellyfish that live in Bikini Bottom. Pink are the most common, blue are uncommon, green are rare, and Purple are very rare. Jellyfish reside mainly in Jellyfish fields, which has a population of four million jellyfish. They live in hives, much like our bees. Scallops - Scallops are similar to birds. They are usually found in groups at Goo Lagoon Seaslugs - Seen in the videogame, SpongeBob! SuperSponge!, they dislike you. Snails - Snails are similar to cats. They are common as pets, they are known to lurk in alleys and forests. Worms - Worms are similar to dogs. They are also common as pets.

Infrastructure

Government

Leaders

The exact type of government is uncertain, because there are many different types of rulers.

  • Monarchy
King Krabs - Medieval ruler of Bikini Bottomshire, sometime before the 12th century.
Princess Pearl - heir to the throne after her father, King Krabs.
Unknown Monarchs - from the end of Princess Pearl's reign to the beginning of the reign of King Neptune.
King Neptune - the ruler of the sea, governs over the sea and, for example, punishes anyone who steals his crown. He lives in his own castle at Atlantis, which is very close to Bikini Bottom.
Princess Mindy - heir to the throne after her father, King Neptune, is the princess of the sea, and will be Queen of the Sea someday.
  • Democratic
Mayor - The name of the mayor of Bikini Bottom is uncertain, however he has been known to open unfinished bridges and present the Snail Race.
President - Bikini Bottom has a president elected by the residents of Bikini Bottom. Squidward ran for president, but lost.
  • Totalitarian
Dictator Sheldon J. Plankton - In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Plankton's Plan Z brought Bikini Bottom into slavery, re-naming it Planktopolis, and becoming a dictator. By then, Plankton ruled the town as King Neptune was too busy worrying about his "thinning" hair and both the mayor and president was presumably under Plankton's control. However, SpongeBob and Patrick soon put a stop to this and Plankton was ultimately arrested for his actions. Control was then restored to King Neptune, the president of Bikini Bottom and the mayor of Bikini Bottom.

Law

These are some of the laws in Bikini Bottom, which are similar to that of United States laws:

  • No Stealing
  • No Parking in a No Parking Zone
  • No Parking next to a fire hydrant
  • No Littering
  • No Driving Blindfolded

Education

The public education system in Bikini Bottom consists of three schools which are Bikini Bottom Elementary, Bikini Bottom School and Bikini Bottom High (which features prom night in the gym). There are also two schools which cater for driver's education. Those boating schools are run by Mrs. Puff (who is the major boating school teacher in Bikini Bottom) and Mrs. Flounder (who runs classes on Monday mornings). There are also a few colleges in Bikini Bottom, they are Bikini Bottom Community College (where Patrick Star once attended) and Bikini Bottom University. Alternatively, adults attend the Adult Learning Centre in Bikini Bottom.

Transportation

An unnamed major highway runs through Bikini Bottom, as does Conch Street, the main street.

In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, when SpongeBob and Patrick are sliding through the second part of the desert, Princess Mindy mentions that this was once a railway track, probably closed due to dangerous terrain.

A road leads from Bikini Bottom to Rock Bottom and also goes past the theme park Glove World. An interesting feature of this road is that for some distance (possibly more than a mile) it runs straight down a cliff. The only ways up from the bottom are by bus or by with a balloon.

As revealed in the special half-hour episode "Where's Gary?", the name of the city bus service is Snailways. This bus service stops at almost anywhere in Bikini Bottom and beyond (much like a Greyhound Bus). Sandy Cheeks also mentioned in a deleted scene of the recent movie that buses run from Shell City to Bikini Bottom, although SpongeBob and Patrick took alternative transport by riding David Hasselhoff.

It is unknown whether Bikini Bottom has their own subway system or not. One thing's for sure though, taxis do operate in this city as well and Bikini Bottom even has its own airport.

Culture

The culture of the city is a caricature of contemporary American culture.

Arts/Entertainment

Bikini Bottom houses three museums: The Can-Opener Museum, The Fry Cook Museum and the Fish Hook Museum. There is also the Bubble Bowl, a music hall, a convention hall, Goofy Goober's Ice Cream Party Boat (for the kids) and the Salty Spitoon club (for strong people only), the Thug Tug and Tough Tavern bars (for tough men only) and The Reef Theatre (cinema). The Krusty Krab is also the place for entertainment with shows such as the Annual Squidward Tentacles Talent Show (featuring the unpopular Squidward Live segment), The Komedy Krab and "The Nude Pranksters," which featured an unclothed SpongeBob and Patrick.

Media

Image:Newsflashpart1.jpg News - The city paper is called the Bikini Times. It features the regular news, as well as daily comics. One of the comics is called The Wisenheimers. There is another newspaer that is called the Bikini Bottom Inquirer.

Magazines - There are two science magazines called Fake Science Monthly and Boring Science Digest. Another magazine is called Fancy Living Digest. There is another magazine that is called Long, Tan and Handsome. Dance Now is another magezine.

Radio - The public radio station is called Bikini Bottom Regional Radio (BBRR) and the three other radio stations are called KRUD (the best "you-won't-get-away-with-stealing-my-car" hits), KRUM (top 40 music) and KOLD (K-Old, your all-oldies station).

Television - It is unknown how many television stations there are in Bikini Bottom but we do know that there are programs such as Adventures of Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy and The New Adventures of Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy cartoons, Bikini Bottom News (television newcast anchored by Perch Perkins), Retirement House Girls Gone Wild (as mentioned by the Realistic Fish Head in a news update in the SpongeBob SquarePants:Battle for Bikini Bottom video game), The Rockfish Files (TV show watched by Larry the Lobster, as mentioned also in SpongeBob SquarePants:Battle for Bikini Bottom video game) and the list goes on. It is also known that there is a separate channel featuring somebody playing the Goofy Goober guitar (as featured on SpongeBob's TV in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie computer game), a kids station (Nickelodeon Bikini Bottom), a sports station (ESPN Bikini Bottom), a science channel and a boxing channel (both featuring boxes, seen in the episode Idiot Box).

Religion

It has been established that the citizens of Bikini Bottom worship the Roman god Neptune. The movie shows this, and there is also evidence in the episodes. There are phrases such as "Oh Neptune!", "Neptune's gentle creatures", and "Where in the name of Neptune". However, Sandy's case may be Christian since she is a land critter from Texas and she brought Christmas down to Bikini Bottom (even though Santa Claus did not come and Squidward had to give away all but his new clarinet instead). It could be argued, however, that since none of the residents of Bikini Bottom are humans, that there is no belief system there.

Sports

It is most likely that in Bikini Bottom, most of the citizens enjoy American football. As SpongeBob frequently watches the sport on his spare time, and that Squidward had dreams of becoming a Wide Receiver.

The Fry Cook Games

Every year Bikini Bottom has The Fry Cook Games (an obvious spoof of the Olympics but with fast food). The Fry Cook Games are held at Bikini Bottom's Fast Food Coliseum. The first annual competition was held in 1980. Eugene H. Krabs and Sheldon J. Plankton went head to head against each other until the 21st Fry Cook Games in 2001. There, The Krusty Krab was represented by SpongeBob SquarePants, and The Chum Bucket was represented by Patrick Star. In the 21st Fry Cook Games, there were 8 events. The tie breaker was bun wrestling. The winner was never determined.

The Great Snail Race

The Great Snail Race is an annual race between snails at Oyster Stadium in the Bikini Bottom Zoo. At the pre-game ceremony, of the 102nd Running of the Snail, Lightning Larry Luciano lights the Torch of Good Sportsmanship (although very slowly). After the torch is lit, the games begin. The first snail to make it across the finish line, wins. Past race results include:

NOTE: In the 102nd annual race, Patrick Star had the trophy engraved to Squidward Tortellini (mistaken for Squidward Tentacles)

Hobbies

The following are some of the hobbies in Bikini Bottom:

Jellyfishing

Jellyfishing is a popular hobby in Bikini Bottom. The best place to jellyfish is Jellyfish Fields, located on the outskirts of downtown Bikini Bottom. Typically, when jellyfishing you need a Jellyfish Net and Jars. Glasses are recommended for safety, according to SpongeBob SquarePants. The Main Jellyfishers in Bikini Bottom are SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, although Squidward (Jellyfishing), Sheldon Plankton (F.U.N.), and Sandy Cheeks (I Had an Accident) have been jellyfishing before. A Jellyfisher's covention center called the Biannual Jellyfishers Convention, is held in Ukulele Bottom. In the Jellyfishers Convention Centre, there are some displays including the State-Of-The-Art Jellyfish nets display and the Harpoon from “Jellyfish: The Movie”. At the convention famous jellyfishers set up displays to discuss their jellyfishing experiences. Such as: Dr. Manowar, who was stung by Big Lenny and Lived; and the Jelly Spotters; their leader, Kevin the Sea Cucumber who was eventually kicked out, and SpongeBob took over until he turned them down. Jellyfishing has a lot of history to it. The inventor of the sport, is Squidward Tentacles, who invented jellyfishing during an accidental time travel in SB-129. He taught a primative sponge and starfish how to jellyfish, because they were torching themselves with it. In SpongeBob B.C., cave drawings of a sponge jellyfishing can be seen in SpongeGar's pineapple. In medieval times, the jellyfish net is modernized, in the episode, Dunces and Dragons. Jellyfishing continues to be a popular hobby in the present times as well as into the 41st century.

Bubble blowing

Bubble blowing is another hobby in Bikini bottom. But the only bubble blowers known are SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star, although Squidward has blown bubbles before. SpongeBob once set up a Bubblestand and charged 25 cents for bubble blowing; 25 cents for lessons. There is a special technique to bubble blowing: "First go like this, spin around. Stop. Double take 3 times: 1, 2, 3. Then, PELVIC THRUST. Stop on your right foot, DON'T FORGET IT. Then bring it around town. Then you do this, then this, and this, then this, then that, then this and that." Some awkward shapes of bubbles include an elephant, butterflies, worms, and many more.

Volleyball

Just like the real sport. In Bikini Bottom, volleyball is played at Goo Lagoon.

Weight lifting

Weight lifting is very popular at Goo Lagoon. There are even weight lifting competitions at Goo Lagoon. Also, SpongeBob has a small fitness center at his house. However, instead of weights, Spongebob uses stuffed animals (rabbits) as weights. SpongeBob has also used a stick with two marshmellows attached to it.

Swimming

Swimming is very popular at Goo Lagoon. It has also been shown that there are small circular pools elsewhere.

Karate

Karate is a popular hobby for SpongeBob and Sandy. Some Karate moves include the Double Overhand Squirrel Knot and the Squirrel and the Tin Cans.

Crime

Bikini Bottom has its fair share of criminals such as Plankton and The Tattletale Strangler. Mr. Krabs has also been known to steal or "borrow" as he calls it. Mrs. Puff or Squidward is always blamed for the crimes actually committed by SpongeBob and/or Patrick and is either arrested or fined to do community service. There is also the punishment of execution by King Neptune, such as if you happen to steal his crown. Bikini Bottom has two prisons: The Institution for the Criminally Tiny and Bikini Bottom Jail for everyone else. The underwater city also has its own courthouse headed by a female fish judge. The Bikini Bottom Police Department is a reasonably fair organization, despite arresting some citizens for no real reason at all, and has been known to imprison SpongeBob and Patrick for their crime of stealing balloons and then releasing them to tell the two that it was National Free Balloon Day.

Features

Bikini Bottom contains most of the features and landmarks found in a typical American town, though presented in an aquatic style; the citizens, for instance, drive wheeled boats instead of cars. Additionally, buildings in Bikini Bottom often resemble aquatic items such as wooden ships and anchors. Most of Bikini Bottom's citizens live in simple gray, cylindrical houses. However, the homes of the series' main and supporting characters tend to be more distinctive.

Landmarks

  • Goo Lagoon: a popular underwater beach for the residents of Bikini Bottom. Also known as Mussel Beach.
  • Industrial Park: A factory-type area with goo storage. During the robot attack, this area was taken over by the Robo-Patrick.
  • Jellyfish Fields: a place where SpongeBob and Patrick enjoys capturing jellyfish. 4,000,000 jellyfish reside here. Other creatures live there such as clams, leeches, and a giant green monster. Objects found are a Treasure chest, an anchor, and hooks. Features include seaweed, rocks, coral plants, and big cliffs. Queen Jellyfish and King Jellyfish live there also. Queen Jellyfish responds to the call of "loser." King Jellyfish likes pie.
    • The Brain Coral Fields: A field of brain coral on the bottom of a cliff in Jellyfish Fields. If someone replaces their brain with brain coral from the field, their IQ changes. in the episode Patrick Smart Pants he falls off the cliff twice in to the field.
    • Jellyfish Caves: Dark Caverns of Bikini Bottom, which leads to Jellyfish Lake.
    • Jellyfish Lake: A large Lake of goo, which also has a waterfall
    • Mount Spork: The highest point of Jellyfish Fields, and the home of King Jellyfish. On the summit, King Jellyfish has a shower and bath tub.
  • Kelp Forest: a forest on the outskirts of Bikini Bottom. Inside, it includes a camping area. In Club SpongeBob, SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward got lost in the forest.
    • Kelp Swamp: A large swamp in the middle of the Kelp Forest. It consists of various islands along side the swampy waters.
    • Kelp Caves: A large cavern in the middle of the Kelp Forest, to get there you must go across the bridge that is located in Kelp Swamp.
    • Kelp Vines: Area outside of the Kelp Caves, consisting of a large vine slide.
  • Make Out Reef: Where couples go to make out in their cars
  • Mount Climb-Up-And-Fall-Off
  • Sand Mountain - a popular underwater ski resort, is the winter equivalent of Goo Lagoon. It consists of three slopes, each of which are graded in levels:
    • (1) Guppy Mound (beginners level), Elevation: reasonably high
    • (2) Flounder Hill (intermediate level), Elevation: challengingly high
    • (3) Sand Mountain (expert level), Elevation: extremely high
You can tongue slide, ski, or snowboard just like any other ski resort. Even though it hasn't appeared with the ski resort in the few appearances it has made, there probably is a boat parking area, as a lot of locals and tourists come here (and buses and boats makes the access to Sand Mountain even easier, otherwise the ski resort would be almost a ghost town, which it isn't).

Homes

  • SpongeBob's pineapple house - 124 Conch Street. His house is orange and is 2 stories high. There is a garage to the side of the house and two windows in the front. The garage can only be seen in the early short Reef Blowers. His house features a living room, which has a couch and TV. Spongebob spends a lot of time here. There is a small table with a phone shaped like a conch shell. One of the corners in the living room is his desk. There is a fishing hook shaped like a fish. There is also a kitchen on the first floor, containing a fridge, and a table, and other typical kitchen tools. Gary's food bowl can also be found here. Spongebob's bathroom, bedroom, and long hallway on the second floor. In his bedroom, there is an alarm clock that is a loud foghorn. Above his bed is a diving board. He has a giant calendar on the wall and a window looking out onto Conch Street. From SpongeBob's bedroom, there is a door leading to his library, which is in the attic. In the library/study, the largest room in the house, there is a chair chained to the ceiling by a fishing hook, as well as a huge pipe organ, and Spongebob's closet. There is also an escape hatch to the grassy roof of the house, that can be seen in Jellyfish Jam.
  • Squidward's Easter Island Head house - 122 Conch Street (resembles the head of an Easter Island moai). On the outside it has a garage to the side, a door in the middle, two front windows on the second floor, and a back window overlooking the backyard. The first floor features a living room which includes a TV, a shelf, and a couch. The kitchen merges with the living room and is located in the back part of the first floor. It contains a table, a counter, and other kitchen tools. The dining room also merges with the living room. It contains many shelves and a table. A hallway leads to a large walk-in closet. The only way to get up to the second floor is to take an elevator. On the second floor is Squidward's bedroom, containing a closet full of alarm clocks, a bed, and a nightstand. Attached to Squidward's bedroom is a large master bathroom which includes a toilet, a sink, and a jacuzzi tub/shower. His art gallery is attached to his bedroom, which includes many of his artistic creations, as well as the place he practices his clarinet. There is also a place to get up to his roof.
  • Patrick's rock house - 120 Conch Street. On top is just an antenna. Inside, it varies between sand furniture, and real furniture such as a bed, bedside table, a TV, and a chair.

Towns

Bottom's Up!

About: Bottom's Up! is a very fancy city seen in the SpongeBob SquarePants: Employee of the Month game. The only thing that's not fancy is Cowfish Craig's shack.

  • Sublime Seafoods
  • Waverly Hills (a neighborhood inside the city)
  • Oxygen Springs

Rock Bottom

About: Rock Bottom is a city geographically lower than Bikini Bottom. In fact, the road from there to here is so perfectly vertical, it can only be accessed by bus. Everyone in Rock Bottom speaks a language the same as english, except they blow a raspberry in between every 2-4 syllables. There is also a vending machine as well as bathrooms (though you can't tell which one's for men and which one's for women if you're not from this town). The city is also known as "The Trench of Advanced Darkness".

  • Bus Station
  • Restrooms
  • Kandy Machine
  • Marlin's Cave - the residence of the weather magician of the sea which is difficult to access.
  • Rock Bottom Museum - Museum with a lot of art work. This Museum also has a large security system.
  • Trench of Advanced Darkness

Shell City

About: Not really a city but it's just a gift shop on the surface owned by the evil Cyclops, selling dried out dead sea creatures. The road to Shell City is dangerous and no-one has ever returned from here, the perfect place for Plankton to sell Neptune's crown. It is located on a beach where SpongeBob and Patrick met David Hasselhoff. In a deleted scene of the movie (which can only be seen in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie DVD), Shell City is actually a city and is where Sandy (who looks ugly on land to SpongeBob and Patrick) constantly gets pursued all over the place by squirrel exterminators in black suits. She also mentions that there are buses that arrive here going to Bikini Bottom.

  • Shell City Lagoon
  • Gift Shop ("Shell City Marine Gifts and Sundries")

Ukulele Bottom

About: Nothing much we know of, apart from being the home of the annual jellyfish convention.

  • Jellyfishers Convention Centre - home of the Annual Jellyfish Convention

Atlantis

About: Home of King Neptune's castle and the Poseidome.

  • King Neptune's Castle
  • The Poseidome

Tentacle Acres

About: Also known as Squidville, this particular town is so unique, due to the fact that it is a gated community of millions of squids (and only squids) living in Easter Island Heads. Sponges and starfish are not allowed to even set foot in this town, but SpongeBob and Patrick got in thanks to fried oyster skins that Patrick ate. Activities here include bike riding, clarinet playing, croquet and interpretive dancing. However, childish games such as playing with reef blowers are not allowed in Tentacle Acres.

  • Places
    • Full of Health (grocery store)
    • Interpretive Dance Academy
    • Park

    • Ice Cream Stand

Leisure Village

About: Not much is known about this place, except that Mermaid Man and Barnicle Boy went there on vacation while Spongebob and Patrick watched the Mermalair.

Palm Bay

About: Palm Bay is home to the legendary master frycook who wields a golden spatula. Grease fires engulf this civilization. Palm Bay spoofs Pompeii, another ancient city. Mentioned in SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Spatula.

Bikini Atoll

About: Bikini Atoll is the signature island above Bikini Bottom. The opening sequence of every episode of the show has the island shown right after Patchy the Pirate (a painting) starts off the theme song. Sandy also dared SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr.Krabs and Squidward to go on dry land here and survived (although birds did attack the group). Some episodes also start off and end with Bikini Atoll shown. To humans (like David Hasselhoff), the island also signals the way down to its aquatic counterpart.

The place name is an ironic double-entendre, as the Bikini two piece swimsuit took its name from the atoll, specifically to the connection between the nuclear bomb test at Bikini around the time that the sexy new swimsuit hit the public "like a bomb". Speaking of which, an atomic bomb was tested here, as seen in "Dying for Pie."
