Data from Statistics Norway

Sarpsborg is a city and municipality in the county of Østfold, Norway. It was founded by the viking king Olav Haraldsson (Saint Olav) in 1016. At that time it actually was the capitol of Norway. The name Sarp means waterfall, which was, and still are an important feature for the industry. Borg means fort, or fortress. So the name says it all, it was a fort by the waterfall (Sarpsborg). Unfortunately most of the old city lays in the river Glomma, after a mudslide between 12-1400. After the town was rebuildt at a safer location, it was finally burnt down to ground by the swedish invaders. The whole city evacuated downstream to what we today call Fredrikstad, about 15km downstream... The population is steadily growing and during the summer of 2005 it reached 50 000.

Borregaard Industries has been the most important industry of the city. The city is also the location for the Borg Bryggerier, part of the Hansa Borg Bryggerier, Norway's second largest brewery-group.

Sarpsborg was famous for its soccer team, Sparta Sarpsborg FK, but is now more famous for its hockey team, Sparta Warriors.
