Searcy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 8,261. The county seat is Marshall. The county was formed December 13, 1838 and named for Richard Searcy, a judge in the Arkansas Territory. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,731 km² (669 mi²). 1,728 km² (667 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 8,261 people, 3,523 households, and 2,466 families residing in the county. The population density was 5/km² (12/mi²). There were 4,292 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.26% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,523 households out of which 27.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% were married couples living together, 7.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% were non-families. 28.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the county the population was spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 6.90% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 19.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $21,397, and the median income for a family was $27,580. Males had a median income of $21,768 versus $16,276 for females. The per capita income for the county was $12,536. 23.80% of the population and 17.80% of families were below the poverty line. 31.00% of those under the age of 18 and 26.60% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
