Seljuk

From Free net encyclopedia

Seljuk (in Arabic Saljūq; in Turkish Selçuk; also Seldjuk, Seldjuq, Seljuq) was the bey (chieftain) of a branch of Oghuz Turks known as the Seljuk Turks. He founded the Seljuk dynasty around year 1000.

Tradition says Seljuk had four sons: Mikail, Junus, Musa and Arslan. Seljuk's grandson Toghrül, son of Mikail conquered Persia in the mid-11th century.

According to some sources, Seljuk began his career as an officer in the Khazar army.Template:Ref

Seljuks expanded from Aegean Sea to Central Asia. With the command of Alp Arslan they took control over Islamic world from Abbasi Khaliphates. In the year 1071 Sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantium emperor Romanos Diogenes and Seljuks began to conquer Anatolia. The year 1071 became modern Turkish history's beginning date. Seljuks were the 'father' of Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey.
