Steinkjer is a municipality and city in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway, located near the northernmost tip of the Trondheimsfjord, in the Beitstadfjord fjord inlet. Steinkjer is connected to the ocean through the narrow straight of Skarnsundet. One of the largest suspension bridges in the world, Skarnsundsbrua, crosses it. Image:Steinkjer.jpg
Steinkjer has survived two major catastrophes in modern history. The first major incident was a city-wide fire in 1905 which burned much of the central parts of the city down. The last major incident was on April 20th, 1940, when Luftwaffe bombed most of the city to the ground with air-to-ground bombardment. The city was rebuilt after the war and much of the architecture is from the 50s and 60s functionalism. Some important buildings survived the bombardment of 20th of April, 1940, the train station and college in particular. The large church was however sadly destroyed.
Steinkjer is Nord-Trøndelag’s county center and houses its regional authorities and institutions. Steinkjer lies by road about 120 km north of Trondheim (by European route E6.
The municipality's scenery is rich, beautiful and varied, stretching from the fjord to the mountains. It is obvious from the landscape that Steinkjer is a typical agricultural and forestry municipality. The tallest buildings in Steinkjer are actually two 50 metre tall grain silos, which are many kilometres from Steinkjer and dominates the skyline, especially when viewed from south. Kirknesvaag Sag & Høvleri is a large wood mill and industry park producing wood planks and treehouse module components.
Steinkjer is one of Norway’s largest urban municipalities by area. Approximately half of the population live near the town center, while the other half live in rural areas. Much of the city is however in the process of urbanization, with the building of several apartment blocks in or in the immediate vicinity of the city. Image:Sparbu vådal.jpg
Steinkjer is easily accessible by road and train. European route E6 and the railway line goes through the town, and it takes around 90 minutes by car or train to get to Trondheim Airport.
Further north of Steinkjer, geographical distances between cities grow quite dramatically. It is therefore recognized as an "outpost" of the more densely populated, southern part of Norway.
Steinkjer also host one of the most prominent music cultures in central norway. A great summary of the music of Steinkjer (labeled "Steinkjer Punkrock City" by its most eager citizens).
