Premise

The series juxtaposes two young, sexy, wealthy, flirtatious urban socialites, Paris Hilton, heir to the Hilton Hotel fortune, and her friend Nicole Richie, adopted daughter of singer Lionel Richie, with the people and the values of varied environments.

Although the show might be compared to the 1965-1971 situation comedy "Green Acres", the show would later take these fish-out-of-water gals into other occupations... with disastrous Three Stooges-style results, stemming from the perception that the two women are out of touch with reality. The show often proved that "flattery gets you everywhere".

The Penfifteen Club recorded one of the show's themes, a tribute song called "(Hey) Miss Hilton".

The first season

In the first season Paris and Nicole moved in with the Ledding family in Altus, Arkansas for a month. But what was supposed to be an assignment in learning how to adapt to doing chores and getting their hands dirty turned out to be an experiment in failure. In the process they would ruin a dairy farmer's milk supply, wreak havoc at a local Sonic Drive-In and take advantage of an employer's credit card, ultimately greatly upsetting the Ledding family. Despite all of this, the two would get a lesson in reality check 101 from the family themselves. As for whether the girls took it to heart...

Road Trip

A second season, titled The Simple Life 2: Road Trip, began broadcasting in the summer of 2004. In this series, the debutantes traveled across the United States pulling an Airstream trailer with a pink pickup truck. They participated in such activities as catching crawfish, working as maids in a nudist colony, and sausage making. The premiere episode showcased Hilton's horseback-riding accident.

Interns

In the third season, The Simple Life 3: Interns, Hilton and Richie take various internships with companies along the East Coast of the United States. The program was taped in October and November of 2004 and aired its first episode on January 26, 2005. The season featured one memorable encounter with twin baby orangutans from Parrot Jungle Island in Miami, Florida. The internships that Hilton and Richie did in the third season are mechanics, secretaries, airline, mortuary, plastic surgery, broadcasting, daycare job, zoo keeper, baker, psychic, nursing, Ad agent, fire fighters, manufacturers, wedding planner and dentist.

'Till Death Do Us Part

Template:Future tvshow Although the show's fourth season was always expected, FOX unexpectedly cancelled its plans in October 2005 both because it had filled its midseason show quota, and because Hilton and Richie had a falling out as friends. On November 28, 2005 E! announced that they have picked up "The Simple Life" and will air 10 new installments in Spring 2006, along with the first 3 seasons. Shooting began February 27, 2006, with the new episodes expected to air in June, 2006.

The fourth season will feature Hilton and Richie playing "Wife" to two different families, in a similar manner to Wife Swap. The girls will alternate between two families each episode, with the families then deciding which of them was better in the role. Although they will not talk with each other, Paris confirmed that they will be side by side in two of the ten episodes. She also says that the show will have a "surprise ending". And also says, "This is the best season so far. I had a great time doing it." [1] Many online forums have speculated that the girls will become friends again in the final episode, and their fight was to bring ratings for Season 4, which were on the decrese by the end of Season 3.
