Thorp is a Middle English word for a hamlet or small village, from Old English (Anglo-Saxon) "ðorp". There are many place names in England with the suffix "-thorp" or "-thorpe". Cognate with German Dorf (e.g., Rheindorf, the Village of Rhein river or Düsseldorf, the Village of river Düssel) and Dutch Dorp.
