Termini

As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus is near Dawson, Nebraska at U.S. Highway 75. Its southern terminus is Kansas City, Kansas at Interstate 435.

Previous termini

Between 1932 and 1965 the highway's northern terminus was South Sioux City, Nebraska. Approximately 20 years later, U.S. 75 was removed from western Iowa along Interstate 29 and placed on U.S. 73's route, superseding it through Omaha, Nebraska.

The original southern terminus was at Anoka, Oklahoma and shortened in 1935 at U.S. Highway 75. Much of this route is now U.S. Highway 69.

Split route

In the 1930s, US 73 was split between Atchison, Kansas and Oswego, Kansas. US 73 West followed the path of modern U.S. Route 59 from Atchison to Garnett, the U.S. Route 169 to Earlton, then turned east on K-146 back to U.S. Roue 59 north of Erie, then turned back south to Oswego.

US 73 East followed modern US 73 to Kansas City. It then followed moderen U.S. Route 69 to Columbus, then K-96 west to Oswego.
