The University of Derby is a university in the city of Derby, England. It also has a campus in Buxton, Derbyshire.
The main campus is on Kedleston Road, in the north-west of Derby. There is also a campus in Buxton, which has a dome, cost £20m and was opened by Prince Charles. A new building for Arts, Design and Technology students at Markeaton Street in Derby is due to open in 2007.
Currently (2006) 54% of students are mature (over 21) and a total of 24,000 students are registered for some kind of course. There are around 9,000 undergraduate students.
The University of Derby doesn't have as big a research programme as other older universities. This means Derby's position in league tables that take into account research isn't too high.
The University has courses in Art and Design, Nursing, American Studies, English, Tourism and Law, business, computing and Psychology.
Facilities for students include Spa Management teaching rooms, an Apple suite, a computer games suite, a life-like Hospital teaching environment with robot patients and a Students Union bar.
The University was the only one in the country to be upgraded directly from a higher education college to a university, along with all the polytechnics in 1992.
In 2003, the University was criticised by the Conservative Party for offering the discontinued course of BSc (Hons) in Hairdressing Science and Retail Distribution at its Buxton campus. The Conservative view was: "We are sure all these courses provide useful training for careers, but are they really proper academic courses?".
University of Derby Students' Union (UDSU), has two bars — The Arms (a traditional style pub) and the Lonsdale Bar (on the site of the Lonsdale student halls). There is a student night called Spank! There is also a student newspaper called Dusted, and a student radio station called D:One.
