Upland, California

Upland is a city located in San Bernardino County, California with an elevation of 1,242 feet. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 68,393. It was incorporated on May 15, 1906, after previously being named North Ontario.

Upland was originally an irrigation colony established by George and William Chaffey. When founded, Upland was a small rural town based on agriculture, specifically citrus fruits and grapes. Present day Upland maintains many of the same features, most specifically Euclid Avenue, the North-South, tree-lined street that runs through town, as well as many of the older, adobe and ranch-style houses. Other highlights of Upland include Upland High School (featured on 60 Minutes in the mid-1980s as an example of suburban high schools with terrible drug problems)Template:Fact, Old Baldy Brewery in downtown Upland, a brewery in the tradition of old craft-brewed ales, and a clear view of Mount Baldy. Upland also has a heritage of skateboarding. The famous Pipeline skate park opened its doors in 1977 and is known for being one of the greatest skate parks ever created. Pipeline had the first full-pipe made for skating leading into a 9-foot bowl. However Pipeline closed its doors in 1988, but today Upland's Public Skate Park is one of the best in the Inland Valley.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.2 km² (15.1 mi²). 39.2 km² (15.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water.

Demographics

As of the census Template:GR of 2000, there were 68,393 people, 24,551 households, and 17,873 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,746.5/km² (4,523.9/mi²). There were 25,467 housing units at an average density of 650.3/km² (1,684.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.21% White, 7.55% African American, 0.76% Native American, 7.27% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 12.34% from other races, and 4.73% from two or more races. 27.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 24,551 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $48,734, and the median income for a family was $57,471. Males had a median income of $43,485 versus $29,973 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,343. 12.0% of the population and 9.1% of families were below the poverty line. 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
