In 1983 (see 1983 in music), Mötley Crüe released Shout at the Devil, a blockbuster success that established the band as one of the biggest acts of the 1980s. After a tour with Ozzy Osbourne, Neil was in a drunk driving accident near Redondo Beach, California. One of the passengers, Razzle (Nicholas Dingley), the drummer of Hanoi Rocks, died.

After completing rehabilitation, Neil and Mötley Crüe released Dr. Feelgood in 1989. He left Motley Crue to pursue a solo career in February 1992. According to some rumors, he was fired because he was more interested in car racing than the band.

In 1995, his daughter, Skylar Neil, passed away of cancer, marking one of the most painful parts of his life.

With Steve Stevens, (formerly with Billy Idol), Dave Marshall, Robbie Crane, and Vik Foxx, Neil began a solo career which quickly petered out, and he was asked to rejoin the flailing Mötley Crüe in 1997 (see 1997 in music). Despite the departure of Tommy Lee, Mötley Crüe released New Tattoo in 2000 (see 2000 in music).

In 2004, Vince Neil was featured in the Rock Never Stops Tour with other 80s rock bands.

Vince married Lia Gerardini in January 2005. The ceremony was officiated by ordained minister and fellow cast member of The Surreal Life, MC Hammer.
