Wayne David

Wayne David (born July 1, 1957) is a British politician He is the Labour Member of Parliament for Caerphilly.

Wayne David was born in Bridgend, the son of a teacher and grandson of a coal miner, he attended the Cynffig Comprehensive School before attending the University College, Cardiff where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Welsh History in 1979 and also qualified as a teacher there in 1983 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, in between his two degrees he studied economic history at the University College, Swansea. He began his teaching career as a history teacher at the Brynteg Comprehensive School, Wrexham in 1983 but left in 1985 to further his political career. He was elected as a councillor to the Cefn Cribw Community Council in 1985, and was it chairman in 1986-1987, before standing down in 1990. He became the chairman of War on Want Cymru in 1987, stepping aside in 1989.

He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for South Wales in 1989 and served in the European Parliament until 1999. He was the treasurer of the European Parliament Labour Party 1989-1991, becoming the leader in 1994 until he left Strasbourg and Brussels. Wayne David was elected to the Westminster Parliament at the 2001 General Election for the safe Welsh seat of Caerphilly following the departure to the Welsh Assembly of the former Secretary of State for Wales Ron Davies. David held Caerphilly comfortably with a majority of 14,425, and has held seat easily since. He made his maiden speech on June 7, 2001, in which he called for a new hospital in his area.[1]

In parliament Wayne David has been a member of the European Scutiny Select Committee and since the 2005 General Election he has been the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence, Adam Ingram.

He was awarded the Charles Morgan Prize for Welsh history in 1979, and was an elected representative on the Welsh Executive of the Labour Party 1981-1982 and 1986-1989. He has been a member of the United Nations Association, Cardiff since 1989, and was a member of the Labour Party's National Executive Committee for four years from 1994. He has been married to Catherine Thomas since 1991.
