Stephen, or Steven, is a male first name, originating from the Greek term Στέφανος (Stephanos), Latinized Stephanus. The meaning of the name is "crown" or "wreath."
Alternative forms and spellings of the name include Steven, Stephan, Stefan (German). Steve is the common short form and various diminutives, such as Stevie, are found.
