Electronics City

Electronics City is an industrial park spread over 330 acres (1.3 km²) just outside Bangalore, India, exclusively meant for electronics industries. It houses more than a hundred industries, including IT industry leaders such as Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Infosys, Siemens, ITI, Wipro, Satyam etc. The area is maintained by Keonics, which provides all the necessary infrastructure.

The Electronics City was the brainchild of R.K. Baliga, the first Chairman and Managing Director of Keonics, Karnataka Electronics. He dreamt of making Bangalore the Silicon Valley of India when he developed the concept of Electronic City. He did not live to see his dream materialize (he died in 1988). The liberalization of the Indian economy in the early 1990's by the then Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and then Indian Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh helped Electronic City to become what it is today—the outsourcing capital of the world.

With the development of Electronics City Phase 2, many more companies have set up shop here and this has led to enormous strain on the connecting roads from Bangalore. In November 2004 the government decided to construct a 9 kilometer long elevated road to enable smoother traffic flow. Work is scheduled to start in April 2005.

Electronic City also is the house for iiit-b. It is one of the premier graduate schools in India that focuses on all aspects of Information Technology.

Traffic Hues

Off late, people travelling towards Electronics City (EC), are taking a real beating with hue and cry over traffic jam and lack of infrastructure.

The traffic jams more of than not a result of a reckless driving by people who dont adhere to the traffic rules. A travel which would normally take about 15 - 20 Mins eventually takes about 1 Hours, causing immense anger among commuters travelling to EC.
