The Freeza Saga or the Frieza Saga is the second major plot arc of the anime Dragon Ball Z (after the Saiyan Saga and before the Garlic Junior Saga). In FUNimation's naming conventions for the English language release of the anime, the Freeza Saga is broken up into three sub-sagas: the Namek Saga, the Ginyu Saga, and the (shorter) Freeza Saga. This article refers specifically to the events in the third sub-saga. In Japan, this saga aired in 1990 and 1991.
The Freeza saga was originally intended to be the end of the series, with a major symbolic plot-ending event which would provide closure to the series. However, despite some fan response that the series was losing momentum, the popularity of the series was high enough that the series continued. In contrast, many considered it to be the moment that the series jumped the shark, with it's introduction of the "Super-Saiyan" power-up and it's ultra-long, even by Dragon Ball Z standards, fights which culminates in an overly long drawn out, 10 episode fight that is supposed to take place within the confines of a five minute period of time.
Nearly all of the Freeza Saga takes place on the Planet Namek.
This is second part of US season three (the first half being the Ginyu Saga and the final half being the Garlic Junior Saga.

Plot Summary
With the fate of Namek at stake, Guru sends the young Namek Dende to give the important password to Kuririn and Gohan that will summon Porunga, the Namekian dragon.
Meanwhile, Freeza arrives at Guru's and he is met by some Namekian warriors and kills all but Nail. He then tries to get Guru to tell him the password but fails. Just as Freeza is about to kill him Nail warns Freeza that if Guru dies then the Dragon Balls will become useless. As a distraction to buy Dende more time, Nail takes Freeza to a field to do battle. Freeza easily overtakes Nail with no problem and when he realizes that the fight is a trick he rushes off to his ship, leaving Nail for dead.
Dende finally reaches Kuririn with the important message and they take the Dragon Balls from a sleeping Vegeta. They then head off to Freeza's ship. Vegeta awakens to see that the Dragon has already been summoned. Since the first two wishes had already been used to bring Piccolo back then to bring him to Namek, Vegeta wants the last wish to ask for eternal life. Just as Dende is asking the Dragon, Guru dies and the Dragon Balls turn to stone. Vegeta's wish isn't granted and what's worse is that Freeza has arrived and his infuriated that the Dragon Balls have already been used. Vegeta in defense, starts to fight his former boss and he rivals Freeza. Realizing they are equivalent, Freeza claims that he is capable of transforming into a much more powerful being. So Freeza transforms to his second form. Which is even stronger than before.
Meanwhile Piccolo, just wished to Namek, senses the fighting and heads that way. Along the way he sees the dying Nail, and Nail informs him on what took place. With a new technique, Piccolo decides to fuse with him. This creates Piccolo, with Nail inside of him, increasing his strength and speed. Piccolo eventually arrives at the battle and stands up to Freeza, who claims that his power level is over one million. Vegeta refuses to believe this, even considering the fact that it's Freeza. As Piccolo remains confident that he can take Freeza down, the fight begins. For a while Piccolo slightly edges out the evil tyrant thanks to his fusion with Nail. Through the battle, Piccolo controls the upper hand. But not for long. Freeza transforms again, nearly tripling his power level, This would be the second transformation but third stage. Piccolo is no match for Freeza in this form. Kuririn blasts a Kienzan (Distructo Disc) at Freeza and cuts off his tail. Freeza quickly flies to Kuririn and hurts him very badly. Gohan attacks Freeza to save Kuririn, and is beaten close to death. Kuririn, who has been restored by Dende, lures Freeza away. Dende now heals Gohan. Piccolo rejoins the fight, and Freeza focuses on him. Vegeta wants Krillin to attack him, so that he will be more powerful after Dende heals him. Vegeta's strength increases each time he is beat to near death. Freeza continues to fight Piccolo until Picollo is once again defeated.
Gohan is furious at Piccolo's defeat and powers up. His hidden powers are revealed as he takes on Freeza. Surprising to Freeza and Gohan's teammates, Gohan proves to be too much for Freeza. Freeza realizing these warriors are getting stronger, he's backed into a corner with no choice but to transform into his final and strongest form, quadrupling (at the very least) his power to unimaginable heights. While Freeza transforms, Dende heals Piccolo. Dende also reluctantly heals Vegeta.
Freeza sees the usefulness of Dende's healing, so he takes the root of the problem. So the first thing he does after he transforms is eliminate Dende. Meaning the fighters will have no more chances to be healed. He also tries to blast Gohan, but Vegeta is quick and saves Gohan. Vegeta not knowing what else to do, decides to commence battle with Freeza and his new found power, and no matter what he does Vegeta is no match. Freeza has the upper hand through out the whole battle. Goku in the rejuvination tank awakens and realizes what's taking place. He quickly rushes off to save his fellow comrades. Goku finally shows up and Vegeta is rescued, but not for long. Vegeta tells Freeza that Goku is the legendary Super Saiyan that will kill him. Freeza gets angry and blasts a hole through Vegeta's heart. As Vegeta dies, he tells Goku the truth of planet Vegeta and Goku's history as a Saiyan, and he asks Goku to take vengeance for all Saiyans. Vegeta is buried by Goku and Freeza and Goku begin to fight.
Using merely 1-33% of his full power in his fourth stage, the battle between Freeza and Goku begins. They seem perfectly equivalent for some time, and Goku even uses his "Kaio-Ken" attack on Freeza, getting some good hits in. During the match Goku seems to have more clever ideas on how to fight, and tricks Freeza several times. Once holding back an energy attack by Freeza and Goku recovers, again running away from a blast Freeza had set up for Goku, where Goku was trapped inside. Goku ran from the blast. Pure Speed. Goku also used to his advantage that Freeza needed to see his opponent, he couldn't feel their energy. So while Goku was under water he used the Kamehama wave as torpedos to trick Freeza. Freeza still claims he's superior, and boosts his power level usage 50%, gradually gaining the upper hand on Goku. Freeza claimed he allowed Goku to think he had a chance. After rigurous attack after rigurous attack, Piccolo , Gohan, Krillin and even King Kai thought Goku stood no chance. Goku then decides to use his new ability learned from North Kaio (King Kai): The Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb). Piccolo steps in to try and hold off the evil tyrant while Goku gathers energy for the attack, although he's clearly no match but still destracted Freeza long enough, and was also sure to pay retribution for doing so. Once finally finished and unleashed upon Freeza, Goku's Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb) does significant damage to Freeza, making the Z Warriors believe Freeza was finished off. Picollo, Krillin and Gohan take Goku away from the damage. A few minutes of celebration was soon turned into a horrid site once Krillin saw Freeza standing on top of a rock face, angry.
Extremely vexed and surprised Goku had suck ability as a Saiyan, Freeza lashes out against the other warriors. First he decides to kill Goku. As he blasts at the Saiyan Piccolo jumps in the way of the blast to save Goku's life. Although it doesn't kill him Piccolo is hurt very badly and falls to the ground unconscience. This enrages Goku. Next, Freeza kills Kuririn by making him explode. He shoots a death beam at him, and explodes his body with his mind ability. Seeing his best friend destroyed strikes an even greater nerve in Goku than what happened with Picollo, and erupts with even more rage. The new, enraged Goku continuously explains to Gohan that he must leave the planet now. In a display of gathering energy, the determined Goku pulls out his strongest emotions ever before reached. His hair turns golden and his eyes turn green. He is now a Super Saiyan, with his power tremendously increased (50 fold, to be approximately precise). He then asks Gohan to take Piccolo to the ship and head back to Earth.
Goku announces he's now a Super Saiyan. Freeza is not impressed until Goku, only toying with him, starts treating Freeza as if he was a ragdoll. Freeza realized he was no match for Goku now, humiliated, and then decides to boost his energy level usage to 70%. After a defeated Freeza decides that if he can't beat this "inferior monkey" then he'll blow up Namek instead. Goku mocks him saying, "You can't win any other way." He plants a huge fireball in the planet's core and the planet starts to crumble. He claims it will explode in 5 minutes.
Back on Earth, Kami and Mr. Popo have gathered all of the Dragon Balls and with North Kaio's help devise a plan to bring back all who were killed by Freeza. Since this brings back Guru North Kaio telepathically asks him to wish all of those on Namek, except Goku and Freeza, back to Earth.
As the battle on Namek rages on, Freeza decides to use 100% of his final stage, providing a showcase for his true power. Although this significantly increased his power level and temporarily made both him and Super Saiyan Goku dead even, it still wasn't quite enough to take down the mighty Super Saiyan. So, at the point of desperate measures, Freeza decides to release an energy disc that he can direct to attack and slice and dice Goku with. Goku easily deflects this attack and Freeza realizes that one is not enough, Freeza releases another energy disc, and attempts to outsmart Goku. But Goku maneuvers at the last minute, blasting into the ground creating a blinding blanket of dust. Freeza is unable to detect energy without physically seeing it, so one makes it's way to cut Freeza in half. Even then, Goku still warned him. As he is dying he begs Goku not to leave him like this. Goku couldn't stand seeing life laying there like that, but he was still concerned about the harm Freeza has done, and could still possibly do. Eventually taking pity on the pathetic monster as he has been relentlessly pleading for help, Goku gives him some of his energy. Goku clearly showed that Freeza couldn't beat him and says, "Do what you want. I'm tired of fighting, I'm going home." As Goku is leaving Freeza bottled rage makes him dilusionally. He's unable to accept defeat, so he makes one final attempt at killing him, throwing a wave of energy at Goku but Goku is too strong yelling, "You Fool!" and pushes the blast back at Freeza destroying him. Goku notices the planet doesn't have that much more time, and decides to High Tail it out of there. After struggling to find a working ship (that being Freeza's, which is infact in no working condition), Goku is frustrated and persecuted, and realizes that, in all likelihood, he won't make it off Namek. Seconds later, the planet explodes.
On Earth, Dende heals Piccolo and realizes that he has merged with Nail. As Guru is dying he transfers his role as Senior Elder to Moori, another Namekian, so the Dragon Balls won't die with him. The Namekian Dragon Balls are then used to wish back Kuririn, Yamcha, and the supposedly dead Goku to life. However, Porunga reveals that he is unable to bring back Goku because he isn't actually dead. This leaves our heroes in great perplexion, as they eventually arrive at the conclusion that they hope Goku is coming home in some sort of spaceship and accept his absence.
Jumping the Shark
Many long running anime have certain arcs which can be utilized as potential endings for the series depending on a number of creative factors. The Freeza arc is famous for having been potentially intended as the closing saga in the Dragon Ball Z animated series, but was continued due to popularity and marketability. Many fans feel this extension signified a moment when the series jumped the shark, in particular after the final intense yet noticeably long fight sequence between Goku and Freeza near the end.
