Ginyu Force

From Free net encyclopedia

Image:Ginyuforce.jpgThe Gi'nyu Special Corps. (Gi'nyu Tokusentai) (FUNimation's dub: Ginyu Force) is a fictional group of characters in the manga Dragon Ball and the anime Dragon Ball Z. They are an elite mercenary team working for Freeza to conquer planets.

A team of super-elite and powerful mercenaries, they are called upon by Freeza to assist in the defeat of Vegeta and obtainment of the Dragon Balls on Planet Namek during the course of the Freeza Saga in an attempt to regroup from Zarbon and Dodoria's previous failure. Though physically some of the very strongest in the universe, the Gi'nyu delight in coming up with strange poses, betting candy on fights, and playing roshambo to decide the order they should fight. The strongest of them all is Captain Gi'nyu himself, a horned, purple-skinned mutant capable of changing bodies at will. All but Gi'nyu were killed by Vegeta, with the last having the unfortunate mishap of body-switching with a Namekian frog.

The Gi'nyu follow the tradition of Dragon Ball characters being named for puns, in this case all manner of dairy products. The name Gi'nyu Tokusentai itself translates to "Special Corps. Milk".

Batta Template:Appears in:DBZ

Image:Burter.JPG (FUNimation's dub: Burter)

A tall blue alien and member of the Gi'nyu Special Corps., Batta fancied himself as the fastest warrior in the universe. During the Gi'nyu arc though, he was outclassed by Gokū, even though he was teaming up with Jheese at the time. Vegeta crushes his neck after his defeat, as the Saiyan Prince didn't entertain the thought of sparing his enemies.

In an extra bit of storyline exclusive to the anime, he and the rest of the deceased Gi'nyu Special Corps. (minus Gi'nyu himself) travel to North Kaiō's planet and square off against the Z warriors who were training there. Batta teams up with Jheese again, though both are bested by Tenshinhan.

His name is a pun for the Japanese pronunciation of butter, batā. The Viz manga romanizes his name as Butta.

Captain Gi'nyu Template:Appears in:DBZ

Image:CaptainGinyu.jpg Template:Main Captain Gi'nyu is the leader of the Gi'nyu Special Corps., as well as being the strongest fighter in the team with a power level of 120,000. He possesses the unique ability to switch bodies when he encounters a stronger opponent. While strong, he was outdone by Gokū, and he changes into the Saiyan's body after purposefully injuring his own. When he sees Vegeta is even stronger he allows himself to be badly beaten, before accidentally landing back into his own body. He's further tricked when Gokū throws a frog between he and Vegeta, trapping him in an amphibian's body with no voice to transform.

In the anime-only, Bulma designs a device for the toad to speak after befriending Gi'nyu, where he wastes no time in taking her body for his own. It doesn't last, as again he is trapped in a frog's body before being wished to the Earth, as was everyone on Namek who was neither Gokū or Freeza.

Gi'nyu's name is a play on gyū'nyū, or milk. The pun carries over into the team name as well.

Gurd Template:Appears in:DBZ

Image:Guldo.JPG (FUNimation's dub: Guldo)

A short, four-eyed frog-like creature, Gurd is is identified as from an alien race known as the Bas-jin. Though clearly the weakest member of the group physically, Gurd had the ability to stop time by holding his breath. Gurd fought Kuririn and Gohan after their powers had been awakened by Guru, and being that they had such an advantage in power and speed, Gurd could only defend himself by holding his breath to stop time and hide. He would later use his Mind Freeze technique to hold them in place, toying with them before extract a tree from the ground to kill them at his leasure. Vegeta attacks Gurd before he has a chance, decapitating him with a ki blast. Insanely enough Guldo is still alive, and snaps at Vegeta for ruining his plans. In response the Saiyan Prince only chuckles as he explodes the disembodied head with another blast.

In an anime-only arc Gurd attacks Chiao-tzu while on North Kaiō's planet, only to be easily defeated like the rest of his group later.

His name is either a take on yōguruto (yogurt) or kurudo (curd). He's called Gurd in the VIZ manga to reflect the latter pun.

Jheese Template:Appears in:DBZ

Image:Jeice.JPG (FUNimation's dub: Jeice)

A red humanoid mutant being with white hair, Jheese teamed up with Batta to take on Gokū after witnessing Gokū defeat Recoom with one blow. Proving to be no match for the Saiyan, Jheese fled to get backup. After returning with Captain Gi'nyu, Jeice fought with and was killed by Vegeta. His signature technique is the Crusher Ball, and in the anime he can team up with Batta to perform the Purple Comet Crash (against Gokū) and Purple Comet Z Crash (against Tenshinhan on North Kaiō's planet).

In the FUNimation dub he speaks with a pronounced Australian accent.

His name is derivative of chīzu, or cheese. He's called Jheese in the VIZ manga to reflect this pun.

Reacoom Template:Appears in:DBZ

Image:Recoome.JPG (FUNimation's dub: Recoome)

A large, human-like member of the Gi'nyu Special Corps. Physically tough, Reacoom first fought Vegeta after winning a round of roshambo. Despite Vegeta striking first with a surprise attack, and using a number of other crafty and underhanded tactics and techniques, Reacoom dominates the battle, apparently taking little damage from Vegeta's attacks. It's likely that Reacoom would have killed Vegeta with his Eraser Gun attack had Gohan and Kuririn not stepped in. Reacoom shows no ill-effects from Kuririn's surprise blow, and proceeds to nearly kill Kuririn with one kick to the head. Gohan was his next challenger, as Reacoom toys with his tiny opponent before breaking his neck with another kick. Gokū's arrival saves them all, as not only could he deter Reacoom from attack, the senzu beans he'd brought along healed their wounds. Reacoom had thought Gokū was just being cocky, but Gokū ended up defeating the giant with one devastating blow to the stomach as Reacoom goes into the theatrics of another attack. Later Vegeta stepped in, obliterating the unconscious Reacoom immediately after killing Batta. In the anime, Reacoom is later seen on North Kaiō's planet, where he and his fellow members of the Gi'nyu Special Corps. battle Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chiao-tzu. Reacoom is blasted into hell by Yamcha and unable to escape.

Reacoom is one of the longest lasting Gi'nyu Special Corps. members in terms of screen-time, though chronologically he is defeated second and dies not long after. He is also the first member of the Gi'nyu Special Corps. to appear onscreen. The order of appearance goes: Reacoom, Batta, Gurd, Jheese and Captain Gi'nyu.

His name is the Japanese word for cream kurīmu (cream) rearranged. Viz went with the spelling of Reacoom in the DBZ manga.

Sentai and the Gi'nyu Special Corps.

The Gi'nyu Special Corps. has some resemblances (maybe references) to early Sentai teams: five color-coded warriors, tendences to pose during battle, role calls and supernatural powers. However, because Toriyama's works usually feature parody, the stances used by the Gi'nyu Special Corps. may be a parody of the stances seen in magical girl animes of the time. Some of the recent references to the Gi'nyu stylistic forms of poses and colorful display comes from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (based on Super Sentai) and even Sailor Moon.
