Interstate 97 (abbreviated I-97) is an intrastate Interstate highway located entirely within Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It runs from Annapolis, Maryland at the US 50/US 301/unsigned I-595 concurrency to Baltimore, Maryland at I-695. Originally the section of MD 3 from Bowie to MD 32 was going to be Interstate 297 but the proposed route was canceled due to local opposition [1]. The state has no official plans but is currently studying the idea of upgrading MD 3 and U.S. Route 301 to Interstate standards; this could extend the highway into Virginia, possibly ending north of Richmond.
