It is expected to be pronounced with two-digit intervals, as "twenty ten" (20-10), as were years prior to and including 1999. This would end the current 21st century pronunciation preference, "two thousand ____". (See Year pronunciation). However, it is not improper to pronounce 2010 as "two thousand ten", as many people might still do so and are pronouncing it that way right now.

Fiction

  • An episode of Stargate SG-1, entitled "2010", takes place in this year. Provided the later episode "2001" did not in-fact preclude its existance.
  • The Simpsons episode "Lisa's Wedding" takes place in 2010.
  • Arthur C. Clarke's novel 2010: Odyssey Two (1984), filmed in the same year as 2010: The Year We Make Contact, is set in 2010. The film's depiction of a USSR and USA still fighting the Cold War is now considerably out of date. The novel, unlike the movie, offers a view of USA-USSR harmony and co-operation. However, it also shows Andrei Sakharov as leader of the USSR, which now can never be a reality. The scenarios (in both book and film) of human flights to Jupiter by 2010, and the detonation of Jupiter by an alien intelligence, seems extremely unlikely at present (2006).
  • The computer game Uplink takes place in this year.
  • The events of Knight Rider 2010 take place.
  • War breaks out between Yuktobania and Osea in September 2010 in the video game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, ending on New Year's Eve.
  • In the television show Macross, the Earth is decimated in 2010 by the Zentradi in a final attack that also ends in the defeat of the Zentradi fleet.
  • The third season of Transformers G1 takes place in 2010.
  • If it is still in production, the drama series Law & Order will match the record set by Gunsmoke as the longest-running American prime time dramatic series (20 years).
  • In the 1990s sit-com Roseanne, a future scene takes place in an episode in 2010 with Jackie reading a newspaper with the headline Chicago Cubs will win the World Series in this year and they say that DJ is promoted.
