History

In 1996 the team moved north from St. Paul, Minnesota to fill the vacated Winnipeg Arena. Initially, the Manitoba Moose were a member of the IHL, and enjoyed moderate regular season and playoff success under head coach and former Winnipeg Jets player Randy Carlyle.

When the IHL folded, the Manitoba Moose joined the AHL and became the official farm team of the Vancouver Canucks. Upon joining the AHL, former Canuck player Stan Smyl became the Moose coach. However, he was later replaced by Carlyle.

In November 2004, the Manitoba Moose unveiled their new logo, and officially opened the new downtown arena in Winnipeg known as the MTS Centre. The National Hockey League player lockout and subsequent cancellation of the NHL season meant an improved level of play in the AHL during the 2004-05 hockey season. This, combined with the enthusiasm generated by a new facility and the team's on-ice success that culminated with an appearance in the third round of the AHL playoffs, resulted in the team's most successful season at the box office. In 2004-05, the Moose averaged 8,626 fans during the regular season, and 9,568 during the playoffs.

The franchise was previously known as: Minnesota Moose of the IHL (1994-1996)
The market was previously served by: Winnipeg Jets of the WHA (1972-1979) and the NHL (1979-1996).
